Furnace on the fritz

Last night as I got home from work I noticed my home was cooler than usual. I checked the thermostat, saw it was calling for heat, and headed to the furnace itself to see if I could figure anything out.

Anyway, I noticed that the furnace was trying to kick on, but would shut itself down after about 5-8 seconds. I noticed a light on the circuit board that would come on as the furnace was trying to start up, but then would turn off like the system was cutting power.

Anyone have any thoughts on what may be wrong?

This is why I heat with wood.

No it is an airpressure switch. It gets plugged often and can cause your problem. It senses pressure when the combustion motor runs and opens the gas valve if it sees pressure. No gas no heat

I had the same exact issue, it ended up being the motherboard had some loose connections. The guy I called fixed it but it'll likely need a new board in the future

This is the kind of thing you need to watch out for. I'm not an HVAC tech but i did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night. But seriously, if the guy watched what your furnace did and didn't bother spending more than a couple minutes testing current, he probably figured out you had a bad pressure switch, to where he could quote you a new circuit board and swap that and the switch in a jiffy, without you knowing what he did.

Hard to say that without calling someone a crooked jerky jockey, but they are out there. The small amount of time he spent is what sends up a red flag for me. I've worked on my own furnace for 10-15 years and i'm quite aware of how they work.

Just saying, if you can grab a pressure switch off Amazon, it's 2 wires and 2 hoses, take about 2 minutes to change and you'll know whether that was the problem all along or not.

My furnace stopped blowing heat the day of the Dolphins/Chiefs playoff game last year. Yes, the coldest day in the past 40-ish years. My thermostat showed 65 in the morning when I woke up so I knew something was wrong (I keep it at 70-72). By noon, it was down to 50. Due to the record cold, I wasn't able to get a "guy" out until the next morning, so I used a free comp'd night at the local casino to stay warm (watched the Chiefs on my phone at the desk in my room). I about froze my nipples off waiting for him the next day after checkout (thermostat read 28). The "guy" told me it was either the thermocoupler or the entire "board"...after a short 10 min. chat, he left my home 45 min later after installing a "board" and a brand new hot water heater. Mine was 21 years old, he had one on his truck ready to go, I said, screw it, let's get it done so I don't have to worry about it. I think it was like $1300 total IIRC.

Also you have a little pot that has a small rubber hose tan or clear. Take one end off lightly suck and blow a few times. Replace that end and do the same with the other end. Then try turning it back on
