Who should be re-signed?

We have a huge list of players set to be UFA after this season. I know it’s only the halfway point, but it’s not too early to start the conversation.

We’re slated to have 24m in estimated cap space according to overthecap and currently have around 23m to rollover from this season. So, unless I’m way off (which is possible, I’m just adding up our current cap space and next years estimated taken from OTC), will have close to 47m in space before doing anything with Sammy Watkins. If we choose to cut Watkins, that adds another 14m in cap space.

Chad Henne
Xavier Williams
Lesean McCoy
Darron Lee
Jordan Lucas
Morris Claiborne
Bashaud Breeland
Emmanuel Ogbah
Chris Jones
Reggie Ragland
Matt Moore
Kendall Fuller
Anthony Sherman
Stefan Wisnewski

So far, Ogbah, Jones, Breeland and Ragland have probably all earned reasonable FA deals unless Veach thinks upgrades can be had at similar cost.

Count me in DJ
Y'know, my first impression was "Maybe Moses falls..."

Then I remembered that Jeffrey Simmons tore an ACL in February and still got drafted in the first round.

Moses will absolutely be on my radar but he was just so highly regarded that, even with the Alabama MLB stigma, I think he'll go in the top 20.

I completely forgot about this but unless a new CBA is agreed upon there will be no June 1 cuts before next season.

I'd love to hear Veach explain the Hitchens signing. I mean, it NEVER made any sense. Even if Frank Clark never looks elite, I get the idea. I get Honey Badger. Hitchens (and his deal) were always head scratchers.

Hardman's getting a lot of love right now because you can flex him into space and find ways to make him useful, but that's the only real way to use him. Just assuming he's going to suddenly become a worthwhile route runner OR become a savvy enough player to pick up the X routes as well as Watkins has is a damn iffy proposition.

Tyreek Hill showed innate WR skills from the moment he was sent out into the pattern. Hardman, OTOH, still looks like a fast guy playing football more than he looks like a wide receiver to me. He has value, but it's important not to peter principle him here and ask more of him than he can realistically provide. At that point, you're eliminating the value he DOES provide.
I'm not sure Chief Fan will ever truly understand the value of a guy like Hill.

I want money available to use on LBs and DBs. With Jones and Mahomes signed we can’t really do anything

Ok, that covers that bad news...

So maddening that the Chiefs seem wholly incapable to getting someone to manage the cap. How can you be in cap hell perpetuity?

I’m really beginning to wonder if ILB isn’t the most valuable defensive commodity you can have in today’s game. An elite one, that is.

They play such a big role in the run and pass game that it is tough to argue. Its why losing Shazier was so critical to Pittsburgh (and why they went BIG to replace him).

If there was that type of LBer in next year’s draft, I’d jump all over it.

I think Ogbah, Sherman, and Breeland have earned an extension. Flip a coin between Henne and Moore if you think they can't be replaced. I don't know what to think of Ragland, maybe pine time got his attention. I certainly wouldn't break the bank for him. Lucas, Lee, and Claiborne can probably be had on the cheap, so keep them. Which brings us to Jones. Yes, he's a force on interior rush, but he just seems to disappear on the run. If he'll take less than the projected $18-20M, I'd say keep him.

Dustin Colquitt injured his quad in the Green Bay game and there is a chance that he may not be able to play this week.

Chiefs signed punter Jack Fox (played for Chiefs during preseason) to their practice squad and could move him to 53 man roster if Dustin can't go.

Chiefs also released WR Cody Thompson to make room for Fox on practice squad.
