Life Special Treatment? I don't think so.... - Page 5

Tonight I had an admit and was told "This woman is a Nurse Practitioner, that works for Dr. so and so and if you don't mind just make sure she is taken good care of, show her special attention in what you do and care for her."

I responded "Are you shitting me?!!, she will be treated no better than any of my other patients I don't care if she is the president of the United States"

This shit makes me sick, thinking someone deserves to be treated better or shown more attention because of their job status. I know this probably happens in every profession, say you work in a plant and the General Manager or the President shows up of course there are ass kissing going on, but in the medical field with sick patients its different everyone deserves to be treated the same. I will not treat her badly or ignore this patient but damned if she will be getting treated any different.

I didnt say I was gonna treat her bad because of her position, I said I would treat her the same as everyone else and I do a very good job with all my patients, I have 11 patients each night to take care of and I do a great job at it.

The Dr. didn't tell me to treat this patient better than all the others, it was just a nurse, and she agreed with me she was just passing along the word from the ER nurse. I don't think a Dr. would ever suggest such a thing.

No offense, but no one is capable of giving 100% effort 100% of the time. Even if you do "A" work, there's always room to go above and beyond and kick it up to an "A+".

I do the very best I can and if I can go above it I will. I will go to other floors to get the patient things they want if I can't get it on my floor which I did for the patient we are talking about last night.
I do want to do more that is why I start to nursing school in May, I would like to do more.

It wasn't the Dr. but you are correct that would have been a more appropriate response.

I look at it this way. A medical professional(nurse, whatever) has a list of tasks. Lets assume they perform each of those tasks equally well for all patients, as they should.

The difference? Maybe you go the extra mile to make sure Mrs soandso is comfortable, listen for an extra couple of minutes....open her orange juice without being a shithead about it.

I've been in hospitals where I knew and had dated some of the nurses. The Extra...is 5 extra people stop in when they're between tasks to say hi, ask if you need anything, or make some small talk to take your mind off of what is happening. Its very small things that make the difference. I doubt the guy was asking badgranny to dip into her oxycontin stash to share.

Let me explain, I vent on here, i am human, my patients do get that extra care and that extra five minutes that i stand and listen or joke and make them laugh. Its hard to hold everything in all the time, I have no one else to bitch to but you guys, sorry but thats the way it is.

When I worked the ER and had to do chest compressions on a woman my age, who we worked on for about 35 minutes I remember every detail, her face, looking at the monitor praying her heart would start back....well it didn't, now I think about her quiet often wondering if I could have done more, done it better or maybe if I wasn't even there it would have made a difference. I was told there was nothing no one could have done, I do have compassion, and feeling and empathy for everyone i come in touch with. I get on here and talk cause at the moment i may be very tired or emotionally overwhelmed. I am not the only one in the profession that feels this way.

I hate the fact i have come across as a inconsiderate bitch with no feelings i am not like that.
