The direction they'll go with that pick remains to be seen, though ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that if the Rams choose to pick a successor for the 36-year-old Matthew Stafford, Bo Nix is a player to watch:

"[General manager Les] Snead was a graduate assistant coach at Auburn in 1993, when the school's quarterback was Patrick Nix, Bo's father. Count ESPN’s Mel Kiper as the latest to put a log on the flame, writing in his final mock draft and rumor mill article that the Rams do have interest in picking Nix in the first round.

“ I’m not sure anyone really knows what GM Les Snead will do; the Rams haven’t picked in Round 1 since 2016. But I do know they at least have some interest in Nix, and it wouldn’t be totally shocking if they picked him at No. 19 — or moved down a few spots to take him. I also see defensive tackle, cornerback and offensive line as possibilities, so it’s not like the Rams are loaded with depth in other positions.”

Albert Breer casually mentioned that Nix to the Rams could happen on a recent podcast appearance, while Adam Schefter recently noted that Les Snead has a connection with Bo’s dad that goes back 30 years to Auburn.

But then, their personnel department came to their senses, obviously.

Using a first-round pick on a player like Nix would be bypassing the opportunity to bring in a player who could make an immediate impact and would probably be met with some frustration from fans.

It's easy to aggressively pursue a quarterback when you believe you've gone as far as you can with Alex Smith.

Drew Brees ended up playing four more years, making the playoffs in each one, with that stellar 2017 draft being a major reason why.
