With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Duffy and Paulino will be back in mid-2013, and they likely won't be 100% until 2014. If you are going to make a run in 2013, you have to basically treat them as if they aren't there.

Chen can be cut or moved to the bullpen, I'm expected a June/July call-up for Odo (His BIBP is still a little high,) and Smith could step in for Paulino (if he's injured again,) or anybody else if they begin to underperform. Final Rotation Hopes? Something like...

You have to enter 2013 considering anything you get from Duffy and Paulino to be a bonus, IMO.

Paulino had his surgery at the beginning of July. Earliest you can even hope he's back is in August. More likely September.

Duffy had his at the end of May. July/August are return windows for him. And both of these guys will need to throw some minor league sessions to get back in the flow.

You can't enter a season thinking you're going to fill 40 percent of your rotation from guys who won't be available for 1/2 to 2/3 of the season.

I believe Hocheaver will be a free agent in 2014, which works out fine for the return of Paulino and Duffy. You can replace Hocheaver and Guthrie in 2014 with Duffy and Paulino.

luck is probably turning around a bit. His base hit yesterday was a blooper.

Agreed, but he also had a solid drive that was caught yesterday early in the game. It looked like a double off the bat.

I'd be fine with all of our starters not named Chen returning next year.

Unless FO pursues FA pitching () we won't "compete" until the following year assuming Duffy and Paulino return and are effective.

Jeff Francoeur just overran a routine pop fly in foul territory. Next pitch, Zobrist hits a sac fly. It's unlikely the Rays would have challenged Frenchy's arm from where he would have been catching the ball.
