The Olympics

Do you find the Olympics to be a big waste of time? Personally, I'm looking forward the the ski jumping.

Good to see some people still have a brain instead of making knee-jerk comments. I said it was "inspiring and impressive, but I'm not sure it's fair". Some are acting like I said, "Why are we letting the cripple in the race?"

Now, on the other hand, I'm not sure why we let the white girls race with the black girls. That's just embarrassing, 'cause they always finish last.

It may be valid but he went through the proper channels and was admitted so get over it.

I'm so sure if these prosthetic limbs were proven to make him faster, other participants would line up for amputation.

It's like saying a guy should be allowed to play quarterback in the NFL, or pro tennis, or pro golf, if he has a replacement arm that automatically slings the ball for him.
These limbs aren't mechanical.

Epic dumbassery.

I think it's certainly valid to question whether someone with artificial limbs should be allowed to compete in an event that uses those limbs. It's certainly impressive what he's done and inspiring, so I'm glad that he's gotten some international attention. But I read an article that suggested the only reason no one was raising a stink about it was that no one expects him to be able to medal. The article cited 5 of 8 doctors they talked to saying that they felt they caused him to have an unfair advantage.

As a few examples, he doesn't get cramps, blisters, etc., and his lungs have to bring in slightly less air since he has less of a body to support.

No one's saying that what the guy has accomplished isn't phenomenal. They're questioning whether the race isn't an apples-to-apples situation and is instead something completely different that shouldn't be in the same race.

What makes prosthetics inherently worse than human muscles?

What if you took away the legs and gave him a bike, would it still be a fair race? That's just replacing one mechanical device with another.

The question becomes who can design the best legs, not who can run the fastest. I'm not 100% comfortable with that.

Those are all interesting points. I thought maybe it wouldn't matter... I'm not sure if it gives him a mechanical advantage... but my biggest concern would've been he can't suffer simple leg fatigue. But I don't know, I'm not in his shoes. The only way you're going to know is find an unbiased test subject, let him run, then take his legs off and do it again.

After watching him in a race I have to say he's an impressive athlete who has accomplished a remarkable feat, but I don't believe he should be allowed to compete. It's a feel good story that makes for great press, but it should lead to a quiet rule change to sustain future fairness.

If they continue allowing it in the future, he should look into the long jump, the high jump, that reeruned 3 step jump, etc. With the right technology I see massive hops being easily attained.
