Baseline popularity for the X-Men was higher than Iron Man, Thor, the Avengers, etc. prior to this whole MCU run. If they can get a good story up and running involving the mutants they'll have the masses running back to the theaters again.

And that's not to mention the firepower they're still sitting on with Dr. Doom, Galactus, and Silver Surfer.

Taking into account how Marvel is building towards Secret Wars it was bound to get real dark real quick, especially bringing in Kang and ultimately Doctor Doom in this phase. They had to start somewhere with the story, so I guess I'm not shocked with this news.

Not to spoiler, but this version of Secret Wars deals with the destruction of all the multiverses out there - basically all versions of everything die. Hard to make a buddy comedy out of that underlining theme, lol.
