Alternate Reality Game 1: Chiefs

The original post is below in blue, but let's summarize it here based on the past few years.

1. If you're a new player, start with the current Chiefs roster. If you've been playing for a while you'll have your own evolved roster.

2. You can add any free agent that the Chiefs add.

3. You lose any free agent that the Chiefs lose, but only if they were on the Chiefs' roster when you began playing.

4. You can accept or reject any trade the Chiefs make as long as any Chiefs player involved is currently on your roster.

5. You do not get players that the Chiefs draft. You draft your own players, using the same draft picks that the Chiefs have.

6. You can trade down ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade down before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.) If you trade down after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 25 percent. Any trade down must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up. (In other words, if you trade away one draft pick you cannot pick up more than three in return.) The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. See the examples at the bottom of the post.

6. You can trade up ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade up before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.). If you trade up after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 15 percent. Any trade up must involve only the picks of one NFL team. The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft.

7. By the beginning of the season, you must reduce your total roster to include only 53 players.

Original post: You can ignore this now.

Spoiler!

Added Rules and Reminders:

1. Remember that you can draft undrafted rookies, so you don't have to select only guys who were drafted.

2. Anyone can change their rookie draft selections at any time, UNTIL we reach ten days before training camp. At that point, all picks will be locked in.

3. Each team can do ONE trade of draft picks if they like, using this chart:http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...t-trade-chart/. However, if you're trading up, you have to pay 15 percent more than the stated value of the picks you're obtaining. If you're trading down, your pick's value will be discounted by 25 percent.

For example, if you want to trade up from the 20th pick in the 1st to the 10th pick, you can see from the chart that the 20th pick is worth 259 points. The 10th pick is normally 369 points, but by paying 15 percent more, it will cost you 1.15*369, or 424 points. So you would need to come up with another 165 points to make the deal (424-259)

For example, if you want to trade down from the 20th pick in the 1st and pick up the 10th pick in the 2nd, your 20th pick would normally be worth 259 points, but in this game it will be worth 25 percent less, or 194 points. The 10th pick in the 2nd is worth 142 points, so you can get 52 points back from the other team. (Remember that you cannot pick up more than two extra picks in the trade, so consider your math carefully.)

You can do only ONE draft-pick trade up and ONE draft-pick trade down, and in each case you can only trade with one other team for their own picks. (In other words, you couldn't take the 52 points in the above example from a third team.)

It's heartwarming that you guys still have KeiVarae Russell on your rosters.

With Tyrod Taylor on the bench, I now have three starting quarterbacks in Russell Wilson, Brett Hundley, and Nathan Peterman. Maybe some of them aren't stars yet, but it's still a win given that I got them all with mid-round picks.

(Looking at stats sheet.) I think we'll keep Peterman at third string for now.

My team placed four pro bowlers this year, which would tie for fifth-most in the league. (However, 8 teams are in that tie.)

My pro bowlers were at good positions, though:

Russell Wilson, QB
Alvin Kamara, RB
Travis Kelce, TE
Reshad Jones, SS

That implies that my team would be a top-ten team if the rest of the talent is okay. Given that I also had Marcus Peters on the team, I'm feeling pretty good about my roster even though I've got some clear areas where I need to improve (like pass rush).

Very nice!

I've got clear areas everywhere I need to improve, like drafting period. Haha. Truth be told, I have 3 young guys that looked like studs in the making that either got in trouble or hurt in Tyler Boyd, Aaron Jones, and Chris Carson... So, we'll see what happens with them. I could end up loaded at RB.

Matt Judon is coming on for me so that's gonna help soften the blow at OLB.

Connor McGovern is starting to play for Denver and has looked good, so I might not be that far off at OLine... Hoping Dorian Johnson catches on in Houston.

Apparently I shouldn't follow John Dorsey's draft guide at DB and ILB...

In retrospect, we should have drafted Kareem Hunt, I guess.

Good job on Judon. I saw his name the other day and thought about this game. I remembered that you'd drafted him, and he was on my list, but I went another direction.

Ouch. Here's my post from Draft Day 2016 (Post 535 in this thread). Boehm briefly started at guard but is now a backup.

4-28 (126th pick) - C Evan Boehm (Cardinals)

I very much wanted RB Jordan Howard here, and considered G Christian Westerman, but in the end I need a center. I was also enamored with CB Zack Sanchez and DE Matt Judon, but went with need
.

Okay, let's see where we stand at the end of the season.

QB
Russell Wilson (Seahawks)
Brett Hundley (Packers)
Nathan Peterman (Bills)

Wilson is still my guy. My two young guys got playing time and didn't impress at all, but hopefully it was a growth opportunity. Grade: A since Wilson stayed healthy and my backups weren't needed.

RB
Alvin Kamara (Saints)
Samaje Perine (Redskins)
Jamaal Charles (former Chiefs)
C.J. Spiller. (Bills/Saints/Chiefs)

Boom boom on Kamara. Perine got a lot of carries, so he's a body in there, but he wasn't impressive. Jamaal gave me some spot duty and I cut Spiller about 10 times. Grade: B+ because Perine had to take some carries and dragged production down.

WR
Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs/Ravens)
Donte Moncrief (Colts)
Kendall Wright (Titans/Bears)
Albert Wilson (Chiefs)
Malachi Dupre (Packers)

Lots of mediocre production. Kendall Wright was my top receiver with a little more than 600 yards, and Albert Wilson was my #2 guy at 550 yards. Grade: D. Lots of okay bodies, no key guy.

TE
Travis Kelce (Chiefs)
Ben Koyack (Jaguars)
Anthony Fasano (Titans/Dolphins)

Great performance here by my #1 guy, and the backups have their roles. Grade: A. Did everything I needed.

OT
Mitchell Schwartz (Browns/Chiefs)
Morgan Moses (Redskins)
Menelik Watson (Raiders/Broncos)
Corey Robinson (Lions)

Schwartz is an all-pro, albeit out of position since he's my LT. Moses was very solid at RT. Depth is shaky, but I didn't need it. Grade: A-. Two good and durable starters.

G
Evan Boehm (Cardinals)
Alex Boone (49ers)
Christian Westerman (Bengals)
Dorian Johnson (Cardinals)

Once an area of strength, I've struggled here. Boehm got benched and Johnson went to the practice squad. Boone is still a capable starter, and apparently Westerman impressed in the little action that he got. I'm building for the future, but wasn't strong this year. Grade: D. Unstable group.

C
Cody Whitehair (Bears )

Great shape here. Whitehair is fine. Grade: B since he wasn't a pro bowler.

K
Cairo Santos, K

Injury problem here, though I've got my eye on a great free agent for next year. Grade: F, assuming that I had to get a street free agent not named Butker.

P
Dustin Colquitt

MVP. Grade: C since he's now an average punter.

LS
James Winchester

Best in the league. Grade: A since he never screwed up.

FS
Jordan Poyer (Eagles/Browns/Bills)
Desmond King (Chargers)

Very solid here. Poyer did fine in Buffalo, and King is a rising star in San Diego. Grade: B+ since I can use King in the nickel, too.

SS
Reshad Jones (Dolphins)
Miles Killebrew (Lions)
Derron Smith (Bengals)

Jones is a pro bowler, and Killebrew is getting playing time. Grade: A since I'm starting a pro bowler.

CB
Marcus Peters (Chiefs)
Steve Nelson (Chiefs)
Mitchell, Terrance (Chiefs)
Kendall Fuller (Redskins)
Kalan Reed (Titans)

Peters is strong, of course, and I've got Nelson on the other side. Some depth. Grade: Maybe a B. We're above average, but not stellar.

OLB
AJ Klein (Panthers/Saints)
Taco Charlton (Cowboys)
Tamba Hali (Chiefs)
Ejuan Price (Rams)

Disaster here. Charlton disappointed as a rookie. Klein finally became a regular starter and is apparently solid, but not spectacular. Grade: F. No pass rush, no real impact.

ILB
Derrick Johnson (Chiefs)
Zach Brown (Titans)
Reggie Ragland (Chiefs)
Scooby Wright (Browns)

Zach Brown is a tackling machine, and DJ and Ragland can hold their own. Reasonably solid group. Grade: B. Solid presence in the middle with depth.

DE
Star Lotulelei (Panthers)
Andrew Billings (Bengals)
Nate Orchard (Browns)
Michael Bennett (Jaguars)
Ifeadi Odenigbo (Vikings)

Lots of defensive tackles playing as 3-4 ends. I can't draft at this position to save my life. These guys clog lines but they don't make plays. Grade: D- because at least Star shows up.

NT
Brandon Williams (Ravens)
Bennie Logan (Chiefs)
Caleb Brantley (Browns)

Pretty good at nose tackle. Williams is very solid and Logan had a good year. Brantley is ascending. Grade: B for talent and depth.

Summary: Going into next year, I have to get pass rushers and edge defenders. That area is a disaster. I could stand to upgrade at the WR and G positions too, if possible.

Remember to make your drafts after the NFL draft, guys. If you don't draft by the beginning of training camp for the earliest NFL team, you'll get the Chiefs' draft. (You could do worse, though. I could make you take the Broncos' draft.)

I'm pretty thrilled at the Watkins and Hitchens signings. Those fill a couple of holes for me perfectly.

I've brought three draft magazines to read on my big trip, so I'll be ready to draft on draft day, and I should have internet coverage then. At first glance, though, I'm kind of screwed. It's a weak year for the two biggest roster holes I've got at OLB and DE. I can never seem to fix those positions.

Yep looking at my team it's once again LT and safety if Kam retires. Rest of my team is stacked.

Funny thing I was like Nostradamus when I drafted Amerson took a while but he finally became a chief.

Well, I guess it's time to start thinking about this.

My picks to start out:
2.054
3.086
4.122
5.159 (I did not trade to CLE for Cam Erving)
6.196
6.209 (comp/Foles)
7.243 (f/TEN for David King)

I will accept the following trades KC made:
Alex Smith to Washington Redskins for 3.078 and CB Kendall Fuller
Marcus Peters and 6.209 to Los Angeles Rams for 4.124 and 2019 2nd round pick

I will then take a huge gamble, hoping the guy I really want falls, and make a pre-draft trade up with the New England Patriots as follows:
2.054, 3.078, and 4.124 (608 points) to New England for 2.043, 3.095, 6.198, and 7.219 (606 points)

This gives me the following picks:

2.043 (f/SF via NE)
3.086
3.095 (f/NE)
4.122
5.159
6.196
6.198 (f/LAR via NE)
7.219 (f/CLE via NE)
7.243 (f/TEN)

I wouldn't normally consider making a pre-draft trade like this, but getting full value makes it a chance worth taking because I won't get to round 1 in a post-draft trade unless I give up 2.054, 3.078, and 3.086, which simply isn't happening. A post-draft trade of 2.054 and 3.078 would only get me to 43 with a 7th thrown in anyhow. I'm banking a guy falls that I really like, but that guy getting by CLE and IND is a huge risk.
