A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

PitchFx shows his fastball velo is actually about a full MPH higher than last year.

Weird that his velo increases, his K rate increases, his walk rate decreases, and his numbers fall apart.

His BABIP is the highest it has been over a full season, so bad luck plays a part. He HR/FB rate is also sky high compared to his career/past few seasons. That suggests he's been a little unlucky (but is also probably leaving the ball up more).

I also wonder if they're trying to stretch him out too much. Seems like Yost almost always leaves him in one inning too long (and he gives up a 3-run jack).

watching Chen this season has been a lot like Hochevar. Horribly inconsistent. Does well... does well.. then bam that wall hits and he gives up 5-6 runs out of nowhere.

The slight uptick in velocity probably coincides with slightly elevated pitches.

Obviously this year wasn't "our time." Some thought we could compete in the AL Central. It's been another disappointing season, to say the least.

So, what are you looking forward to the rest of the year?

Other than the usual (bring up WM, DFA Frenchy, firing Ned, etc) what are you looking forward to the rest of the season?

In your opinion -- what would you consider to be a successful end of 2012?

Just curious what everyone's viewpoints are currently.

At this point, I don’t think there is such a thing.

Personally, I’ve completely forgotten about the Royals except if I see them playing on TV when I’m at the bar (and the last time I was out when I knew the Royals were playing, they had poker on TV instead)

I want to see Will Smith solidify himself as a ML starter who can be a good back end of the rotation guy.

I also want to see Billy get 37 HRs at least.
