ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is saying with Jones tag # being what it will be, the Chiefs are unlikely to tag him.

If so, I'd tag Sneed.

I think both sides know that this is CJ's last season in KC. I think both sides are using this season to get used to that reality.

The Chiefs WR's struggles have been a season long issue.

I don’t see why they couldn’t carry the tag number for just long enough for a trade. Hell, accepting a 2nd and a 4th may not be the absolute best value they can get but it’s better than nothing if they can get it done before free agency.

But if he does walk for nothing then they really screwed the pooch on handing this situation.

If they were gonna trade him, the time to have done it was this past offseason, around the draft etc.

At this point....it's kinda done.

Snead/CJ are both gone.

I hate losing CJ more, but Snead already has multiple capable replacements on the team.

I dunno. Sneed and McDuffie are just such a great pair. I'd like to keep them together but it may just not be possible.

Can’t just let everyone walk all the time though. Has Veach ever extended a single draft pick of his? Signing Nnadi to annual 1-year extensions because he’s not good enough for any more than that doesn’t really count.

If Danna is gone the DL of Karlaftis, FAU, and Omenihu looks like a group of complementary players who might get exposed without Chris Jones taking constant double teams. At least they could keep together an elite secondary that will be able to cover.

They haven't signed anyone he's drafted to this point, but it's only been a year of his draft picks being able to sign so we'll see.

Yeah, the DL could get thin...but again, this is what happens. You draft and develop, guys walk, you keep drafting and developing. Once you have a QB on the contract he's on and are paying a G and a T what they are, someone gonna have to go.

With how hard they've hammered the Defensive backfield in the draft, it could be pretty easy to let Sneed go. I would imagine they see Connor stepping into a role somewhere to help with the Sneed loss.

That's a pretty poor way to enter a trade. If your trade partner knows you can't afford to pay the contract they definitely are in the drivers seat from a negotiating stand point. The only way they should use the tag is if they truly can and are willing to pay it. It also ruins your ability to negotiate with other FAs because it knocks 30M off the top of your cap space.

We haven't needed to extend our guys bc veach is so good at replacing them. But it also uncovers one of my concerns about going all in on this defense. We're gonna learn pretty quickly that keeping an elite defense is a faucet you can't turn off. If you divert focus for even just a year your pipeline falls behind. Arguably even with all the picks we've thrown at defense we still have big decisions to make on guys like Willie gay, CJ, danna, etc....

I still think the goal for this defense is ultimately to be great but maybe more on the edge of elite than actually elite. While they're elite it's awesome to have. Let's ride the hell out of it. But is that sustainable? I dunno. I do feel like the offense, on the other hand, is really easy to sustain and requires a way lower investment to make us elite. All the more reason to always ensure the offense is set for years to come.

Offense generally translates more year to year. Defenses are so much about the sum of the parts than the actual individual parts, it's all gotta work together.

It's also a reason I'd rather keep and pay a guy like Jones (maybe not not due to age) because you just need playmakers. You can fill the rest around them easier. Another reason I'd like to keep Willie around if possible.
