With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Sort of on topic, but has anyone noticed how much they are playing the, "what it takes to be a Royal," Jeff Francoeur version, on 610 lately? It's like as his play gets worse and Myers continues to rake, the Royals propaganda machine kicks into overdrive. As if hearing that will make us all forget about his dismal year.

You cant put the blame 100% on him, but he should have been able to control the wildfire of the 12 game losing streak and the Disaster of July.

Hes probably gone if the Royals lose 95 games. I dont know how you can sell the fanbase on him? But who knows......ill bet Moore is gone after next year too.

i tend to think that it's a cultural problem ... we have talent on this team and they aren't living up to it. Is that the manager or the culture of 'expecting to lose'?

i dunno.

If the guys we have play up to what they should then we are a couple of stud starting pitchers away from competing for the playoffs.

That said i don't know that we will ever being able to win as long as we continue to choke under pressure.

Francona is out there. You can make the arguement that he could have been, in part, lucky to manage a team with so much talent in Boston but I doubt anyone believes he isn't better than Yost anyway. How much difference would a WS winning manager like Francona make over a Yost you think if they both had the same team?

I nave no idea. If it's 10 games we could sure use a 10 game improvement. This team has a lot of talent (minus pitching) going forward too. Maybe a guy like like Tito could bring a level of respect and trust that Yost doesn't just bring with him simply because of the rings. Maybe even just that could get the players attention more from the start. I'm just speculating.

I know if I was a player, especially a young player and I've been playing for a manager who hasn't won a WS, then I get a new manager who has, it's going to get my attention and help me believe. I think it would inspire me that "hey this guys been there with one of the big teams and has won it all. Our chances just got better... let's do this."

Maybe that's just me.

I would agree with that. He might be able to help lure a good FA pitcher too?

Whatever the case, you guys are right, this team has a ton of young talent,especially if you include Giavotella and Myers. They should be better than they are.

He certainly wouldn't hurt our cause. This team could use a guy with a little credibility.

No way.

The best managers might win a team an additional 3-5 games. The worst (think Hillman) might cost 3-5 games.

Yost is a middling manager.
