I look forward to the day when we're 3rd and 6 from our own 6 yard line. The defense blitzes six, Mahomes steps up, sets his feet, and goes bombs away to Tyreek down the sideline.

He connects on that throw one time in 10. Wanna try it on 3rd and 17 from the 50? Sure, you do you, boo. But that decision on 1st down when you're a simple swing pass away from a game-winning FG was a bad one. Situational football is huge and that was a really REALLY bad demonstration of situational football.

For perspective, the throw he made to Robinson was about 25 yards in the air off his back foot. He needed to more than double that throw (which was incredible) and do it over the middle of the field.

It was a silly decision.
Agreed. That was the ONE play I was disappointed in seeing from Mahomes. It was a bad decision in situational football and my guess is that Andy will grill him for it.

The INT wasn't a bad decision, just a bad throw in his first Quarter jitters. Forgiven.

Different story because had he done that I'm not sure he floats it over the middle as much as he did. If he puts it further to the right (by setting and making a more accurate throw) then he has Harris and a size mis-match going 1 on 1 vs (I think) Harris. That's still risky as hell and unnecessary on 1st down, but it's getting closer to defensible.

But thinking he can fire one damn near 60 yards without setting his feet....well I hope the young gunslinger just learned something about the limits of his mortality. Kid wrote a check his ass couldn't cash.

There's nothing wrong with that and if he's going to do it, a meaningless week 17 game is the time to learn. But he needs to learn from it and fortunately I don't think the coaches are going to hand-waive it.

And yes Pat got lucky on that throw to Harris, really should never have thrown it, but goddamned if he still didn't nearly hit him in the hands in spite of two defenders being on top of Harris. And he did that rolling out off his back foot, too. Rare, rare arm strength and accuracy.

This is what I said last night. 1st down with plenty of time and you only need 5-10 yards to get in FG range..

Mahomes said he played outfielder and some short stop in his baseball days. He sure as hell looks like a short stop playing QB. He’s got to have a ton of experience fielding ground balls close to 3rd base where he picks up the ball and just turns his body to fire a heater to 1st base.

That was one of my only real negatives that I saw from him. Set your feet on those and your accuracy/strength will improve 10 fold.

Russell Wilson is a very good comp since he played baseball as well. Wilson entered the league with much better mechanics than Pat, but I foresee Pat getting better with every game.

None of his throws are what impressed me the most. I was floored by his mental ability. Pat was killing multiple plays, audibling, reading blitzes immediately and took advantage of nearly every blitz Denver threw at him.

That was Pat’s first time doing this in the NFL. Amazing how far he’s come.

Gonna be a fine line between trying to harness Mahomes in a bit and while encouraging him to not go dink crazy either. Sometimes you've just gotta let these gunslingers sling....otherwise, you might end up with another Alex. Let's face it, you kinda can't have it both ways, and I'd much rather see our QB making "mistakes" trying to win rather than suckle on the safety of the dink.

No doubt - getting the ball 50 yards in the air off nothing but arm strength is unreal; arm throws just don't do that. Though if you look at the wide cam, I think the 'accuracy' is a bit overstated; looks like Harris did a nice job adjusting when Mahomes actually threw him into coverage instead of away from it.

Kid has talent for days and his ability to just throw from any angle is something we rarely see. I know people are citing Rodgers a lot but I think Cutler is among the more interesting guys we've seen in a long time at that. Stafford is as well. Both of those guys are/were capable of unleashing absolute piss-rockets from virtually any arm angle.

The difference between Rodgers and Cutler is discretion. Cutler thinks there's ALWAYS a lane, 100% of the time. Rodgers thinks there's a lane 90% of the time and in that other 10% he just gets rid of it.

The difference between one of the best QBs to ever live and a walking Meme is that 10%. It's the 2-3 throws a game that Cutler attempts that Rodgers won't. Because their best plays aren't that dissimilar; it's their worst that separate them. Mahomes can be a Rodgers type QB, but the capacity to be closer to Cutler is in there as well.

I don't think we have to worry because like I said - I think he demonstrated outstanding growth even from the pre-season. But you have to recognize mistakes to learn from them and I hope he does here.

Throwing it as he did was definitely a poor decision. Had he taken a beat to set and throw, he's got the arm to make that throw. Would be interesting to know if he saw a shrinking window with the other safety coming across the field and tried to fit it in quickly, or if he just got excited and didn't realize he had time to set.

Either way, rookies will make rookie mistakes. The fact that it was nearly complete is kind of crazy, given how he threw it.

What's more interesting about that play isn't even the step-up, its him operating in the play-action and doing damn well at it despite Sherman doing everything he can to ruin that play.

Find the reverse angle somewhere, he executes a great play fake; gets the ball into his body, hides it well and does all that old school DeBerg shit to sell it. He works a little but Sherman doesn't even pretend to have the damn ball. Then he ****s up his block to boot. Mahomes does a nice little roll and if he has more time (i.e. if Sherman doesn't blow it) I'll bet you something opened up downfield.

From a pure mechanics standpoint, you saw that coaching at work from a guy that 'can't work under center'. It was damn encouraging.

I noticed the same thing from Sherman after watching that gif via #BaldyBreakdown. Sherman does not sell the run AT ALL. The Bastard...
