The Last of Us' Series in the Works at HBO From 'Chernobyl' Creator Craig Mazin, Neil Druckmann (Exclusive)

Craig Mazin, the creator of the acclaimed limited series*Chernobyl,*is reteaming with HBO adapt*The Last of Us, the massive Sony PlayStation video game franchise.
In a rare development in the world of video game adaptations, the writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann, is also involved, and will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce what is intended to be a series.

Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, the president of Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based developer of the game. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions and it will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions.
Originally launched in 2013, Sony and Naughty Dog’s*The Last of Us*garnered critical praise for its engrossing tale of the post-apocalypse centered on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be a key to a cure for the deadly pandemic.
Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival. The HBO series will cover the events of the original game, which was written by Druckmann, with the possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel,*The Last of Us Part II, which will release on May 29, 2020.
Mazin, who is said to be an avid player of the game, stated, “Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and*The Last of Us*is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”
“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of*The Last of Us,” said Druckmann in a statement. “With*Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of*The Last of Us*to life as a television show.”
Last of Us*won numerous “game of the year” awards and went on to sell more than 17 million copies across both its original release on the PlayStation 3 and a remastered version on the PlayStation 4.
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life,” stated HBO programming president Casey Bloys.

Druckmann is a longtime vet of Naughty Dog, starting as a programming intern in 2004. In 2007, he was given the role of game designer on*Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the first installment in the action adventure series. In 2013, he created*The Last of Us, based on a concept he developed as a student at Carnegie Mellon University.
Mazin’s*Chernobyl*tackled a bleak and complex true-life event and became a must-see show for HBO. The show won an Emmy for outstanding limited series and landed one for Mazin for outstanding writing. Mazin also won a PGA and a WGA Award.

Holy shit this is gonna be awesome.

I think it's funny that Marlene played the whole "she would have wanted to sacrifice herself" angle even though earlier she admitted that they didn't tell Ellie what was going to happen

'Abrupt' is the word of the day and so apropos when describing that episode.

I somehow got my mom into a 'zombie show' and she absolutely loved everything minute of it beyond the first episode.

Nearly flawless first season.

Now that it’s over…I almost wished that they would have split season 1 into two seasons and hashed out more of things. Still a great show but it felt rushed.

Great season, great finale. That ending also raises some interesting ethical questions with those two characters (one that I'm sure anyone who played the game has been discussing for a decade).

You can spin it any way you want, but Marlene is just murdering a child in the hopes of a greater good. She didn't tell Ellie about the procedure, didn't give her a choice in going through with it, and clearly did not give a shit about Ellie's own autonomy (despite making a promise to Ellie's dying mother to protect her and despite trying to appeal to Joel in that regard). There are also no guarantees that their cure is actually a cure. It's all supposition. As far as we know, nothing like it has ever been tried. Is the potential of a "better" world worth it if it comes at that kind of consequence? If it's built on murdered children? Most would say no. I would say no.

Joel, on the other hand, saved Ellie from the procedure and her death, but made a selfish choice in doing so (and then lying about it) and one that could ultimately doom humanity. Yes, he deeply cares about Ellie but it was made clear he believed he had nothing left to live for without her. How much of his decision was about how she makes him feel more than anything else? He couldn't even bear to tell her the truth about any of it because he didn't want her to leave him. He made a decision for his own personal happiness at the expense of everyone else who has to live in that world. It's an incredibly selfish act but one that does fit his character (he's not a good guy and I suppose he's never pretended to be).

Ellie ultimately deserved to know what happened and deserved to make the choice for herself, although I'm sure Joel would argue at the same time that a choice/decision of that kind of gravity shouldn't be put on a child (and he'd also probably be right). If you tell a kid like Ellie that they are the key to the fate of the world, what are they going to do? Probably go through with it (and certainly that was the implication of this episode).

There's no easy answers here, but interestingly I think what we're supposed to take from the final scene is that on some level Ellie already knows that Joel is lying about what happened and has chosen to accept it regardless. She's been alone all her life and needs him just as much as he needs her.

This is why I felt a little underwhelmed with the finale. It ended and I was like that is it, I think it only lasted 45-50 minutes or so.

Why were the last 2 episodes paced so badly? Just frenetically jumping from one beat to the next with no time to actually let things sink in for folks who are new to the show.

It seemed pretty spot on to the game in the finale but missing some fights in the qz area and an underpass area with infected with water/cars which I would've liked to see but they stopped before that part.

David's episode missed on some infected fight on the house area but can't recall more than that. Someone correct me if there was more. I still am not a big fan of 2 KC episodes with that lady.... could've reduced it a bit and used some of that time in the finale.

Sure they could've given more dialogue etc to make room to breathe I guess. Didn't bother me much cause it seemed almost all game accurate.

I love this show but I feel a few more episodes would've been money for sure. Maybe they were limited on episodes being a game adaptation but idk. Hopefully they flesh it out more in the upcoming seasons.

I really wish they would have had two episodes for each of the last two. The David story went pretty quickly and then the hospital.
