2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: ![]() Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

So the Marlins wants something similar to what the Braves gave up for Teixeira? Let's break that down:
Jared Saltalamacchia: No. 36 prospect by BA coming into the 2007 season, Salty was having an OK season at AA and in a cup of coffee at the MLB level. He was the Braves top prospect, with value driven much higher by his position. Royals counterpart: This is a tough call, but it's not Wil Myers. It's more Christian Colon (level/position-driven value) or Jorge Bonifacio (value/upside) Elvis Andrus: No. 65 by BA. Was hitting .244 at Advanced A at age 18. Stil a long way away but with huge upside. Royals counterpart: Aldaberto Mondesi or Orlando Calixte. Matt Harrison: A fringe top 100 player at No. 96, with limited upside. Viewed as a 3/4 starter in the majors. Nice piece, but not a deal maker/breaker. Royals Counterpart: Prospect wise, probably Cheslor Cuthbert or maybe a Sugar Ray Marimon (not sure why he made the top 100). Neftali Feliz: Not ranked by BA entering the season. Was in the midst of a strong campaign at A-ball that saw him enter 2008 ranked No. 93 by BA. Was viewed as a young/raw thrower. Royals counterpart: Angel Baez (who is a hell of a rising prospect for the Royals) So, the Royals package would be something like: Jorge Bonifacio, Calixte, Colon (or Gio, I suppose), Sugar Ray Marimon, and Angel Baez. That's a fair price for Josh Johnson, I think - and KC is FAIRLY close to his home in Oklahoma, which is important to him for long-term outlook. I'd do this deal with little hesitation. I might try to see if I can convince the Marlins to take Mike Montgomery instead of Calixte or Bonifacio, though. Royals certainly CAN easily afford to go get Johnson without empyting their system out or surrendering Wil Myers, Bubba Starling, or Jake Odorizzi.

I think he has the makings of a AAAA pitcher. But the only way to find out is to bring him up. Or maybe that's why they aren't bringing him up. |

Prospects are lottery tickets. Assuming we can extend him, even if only a few years, I say do it.

I think Jeff Nieman from the Rays should be the target. |

It's not a "find." Dude wrote that blog post. He's been linking to his blog instead of giving his takes here on the board.

Royals have now reached the irrelevant stage. They barely made the front page of the KC Star Sports section this AM. NFL training camp, the Olympics, even Sporting KC are going to get more ink. Royals will languish on page two and three for the rest of this year.
Same as it ever was. |

Its funny. I couldn't give a shit about the chiefs until they get a real qb. Ill still suffer through every game, but I won't get my hopes up.

Even I.... one of the biggest believers on this board... have quit paying attention this year. Haven't even followed on gamecast for a week. I love them. I'll always love them. I just can't invest the energy and time just to keep getting frustrated.
I imagine the rest of the season for me is watching for who we bring up/trade and who might get the ax. Next season mode is well under way.

I'll be interested again this year if/when Myers debuts.

Rany: Frenchy has negative trade value. Given his poor play and contract, you will have to throw in value to get someone to take him off your hands.
Gives example of trading Broxton, Mijares, and Frenchy with no expectations of any viable return just to get Frenchy off the roster. ![]() |
