Tourist(s) missing in submarine while trying to reach the Titannic

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/u-s-coa...-sub-1.6446841

Quote:
A search and rescue operation is currently underway to locate a submarine that went missing during an expedition to the Titanic.
The U.S. Coast Guard was looking for the submarine Monday morning after it disappeared during the expedition from St. John's, N.L. The infamous 1912 wreck is located more than 600 kilometres southeast of the province in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The trip to the Titanic was being run by OceanGate Expeditions, a U.S.-based company. It uses a five-person submersible named Titan to reach the wreckage 3,800 metres below the surface. OceanGate's website advertises a seven-night voyage to the Titanic for US$250,000 per person, or approximately CA$330,000.
"We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely," an OceanGate spokesperson said in an email to CTV News. "Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families."

Those tours are a series of five eight-day missions to the Titanic with the money raised by tourists going towards Titanic research. Posts on social media show the ship launched from the St. John's area last week.

Did they really have 5 people in this?? Or do they have a larger version??

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/titan-c...nder-1.6451582

The concerns surrounded the company's decision to rely on sound monitoring for cracking and popping noises made by the hull under pressure to detect flaws rather than a scan.

OceanGate told CTVNews.ca in an email on the subject of the design and build of the Titan: "We are unable to provide any additional information at this time."

Marquet says the design of the Titan and the materials used to construct it, concerns him.

"It has this big window and that's a vulnerability," he said. "There are no windows on military submarines, for a reason. So the window itself, where the window meets against the vessel is a vulnerability."

According to the lawsuit, the submersible was designed to reach depths of 4,000 metres, but Lochridge said the passenger viewpoint (window) was only certified for depths of up to 1,300 metres, and in the suit he alleges, OceanGate would not pay the manufacturer to build a viewpoint cleared for 4,000 metres.
Brutal.

Sure, he said that. But it doesn't appear he actually did that as he himself, a 61 year old man, did the piloting.

So to say, "this happened because he wanted young pilots", seems rather pointless.

Unless you want to make the point that you believe this happened because of a failure to find a pilot young enough, therefore he did it himself. But i'd venture to guess he didn't find a pilot because he's a cheap bastard and would rather do it himself. Could also be that he thought he was the best pilot for the job since they're his subs.

I don’t think his desire to hire young people was just about saving money. Sure that was part of it, but I think bigger than that was he could avoid having people on his projects who would have more knowledge and experience to question what he was doing with regards to designing and building the thing. It wasn’t lost on him that the submarine community was not happy with his projects but he didn’t care and just wanted to get things done seemingly as quickly as possible, but also with a dash of ego that he could do things better than whatever industry standards exist.

I think the argument he was seemingly trying to cut cost is extremely relevant as it wouldn't likely only apply to who he hired to pilot the sub.

This.

Dude was already skating safety protocols. He didn't want actual experienced people slowing him down.

So was it just recently that they got a ROVs down there? Seems like if the submarine or its debris field was near the Titanic it would have been spotted pretty quick once the ROVs started working.

If it imploded that would’ve been the best thing for them instead of just sitting down there waiting to die.

This morning, yes:

Underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were deployed Thursday morning to search the Atlantic Ocean floor for OceanGate's Titan submarine, which vanished Sunday morning with five passengers onboard.

But the story is real real real real bad. And Kirk Douglas put a stamp on that sucker.

But yeah, that's some high quality cheese right there.
