Guys aged 65+ what was it like to be a young man in the 80's?

Something to take my mind off the events of this past weekend....

Older dudes, what was it like to be an adult the 80s?

Was it like printing money?

Did you have a Camaro? A van? A Nissan Pulsar?

Did you try the cocaine?

Did you go to US festival?

Other than the Chiefs being in the abyss, what was it like?

Give us all the good stuff.

The 80's, whew....

I started first 'real' job, started making the money. I think I made about $22K in 1980 and was living large.

Bought our first house in 1981 (interest rates at 14%), second house in 1983 (12.75% interest). Still in that house. (refinanced at 9.75% and again at 6.75% - paid off the 30 yer loan in 17 years.)

Partied quite a bit in those first years (yes, I tried cocaine, but didn't make it a habit).
Then the kids came along, and the partying days disappeared.

Graduated HS in 83. Great time to be a Dodgers Lakers and Raiders fan.

Coke and pot everywhere but I preferred beer and Copenhagen.

First car was a hand me down 1963 VW bug, then a 79 Nissan King Cab and by my early 20’s, I bought a 1968 GTO in clean condition from original owner for $1,500.

Loved snow and water skiing in those years and chasing tail. Life and music was great and went to more rock and country concerts than I can remember.

The good old days are gone forever

PS: memories of hitchhiking around the Lake Tahoe basin in my early teens. Also cutting school in 5th grade and taking BART to SF to buy firecrackers in Chinatown with a bud. Parents never knew. Back then it didn’t feel unsafe

Reading all these posts make me realize how much of a goody 2 shoes i have been in my life...

Never smoked.....nor tried illicit drugs. I stopped drinking at age 26 in 1982 but was never really a power drinker to begin with. Played a lot of softball from age 24 till I retired in my 50's.

Family really became my focus during the late 80's and early 90's.

The one constant in my life was the Royals and the Chiefs....could actually afford to go to the games back then.

P.S. - My one absolutely silly purchase i ever made was a Smokey and the Bandit car...sold it 2 years later.

Graduated HS in 76, college in 80, retired in 24. 8 track players and 60s/70s muscle cars. Seems like everyone had a 351 Mustang or 350 Camaro (except me). Disco and going to the 18 year old bars in KS. Dad died in 83 and I went on a 7 year bender trying to numb the pain. Played a lot of foosball, drank lots of terrible beer, smoked lots of weak pot, bowled and played table tennis. Did coke a couple of times, didn't much care for it.

Started at $16,500 in 1980 and that was enough money to buy a new car, rent an apartment and party like it's 1999.

Sometimes it seems impossibly long ago and others, just yesterday. The 80s were mostly pain and sadness for me.

I want to know about softball in the 80’s vs the shit show it is now with competitive ball. Did they have divisions like d, c, b? Was it mostly just beer leagues? Did you have tournaments? How bad did the bats suck?

I was working @ the KC Board of Trade, those commodity traders were all smart and wild as hell given half a chance. I'd drink beer after work - but not much. Driving a Mitsubishi Starion, quite a car for the times. Chasing my ex wife, it's a shame I caught her.

KC Board of Trade brings back some serious party memories at the BBQ gathering in the old stockyards. I think it had a name, but it escapes me…
