Joey's Top 15 Chiefs

I’m going to be starting a new series called Joey’s Top 15. The number is obviously in honor of our current QB. I’ll be sharing my top 15 of everything over the next year, from Chiefs Players, Music Artists, Clothing Items, Movies and so much more.

Does anyone care?

I doubt it.

I’m doing it anyway. Can't whoop me.

I’m kicking the whole thing off with my top 15 favorite Chiefs. These aren’t necessarily the best to ever wear red and gold, but they are my personal favorites. Keep in mind, I’m only 32 years old and I won’t be adding anyone I never saw play.

Let’s Go!

15 QB Chase Daniel

Greatest QB of All Time to never get a real shot. He’d be in my top 5 if he’d played for us longer. He’s obviously my top Tiger of all time.

14 G Brian Waters

Love it when undrafted guys make such a huge impact for my favorite football team.

13 FB Tony Richardson

I always loved this guy when I was a kid, mostly because I had a newspaper clipping of him holding up Priest after a TD stuck to my wall for years.

12 LB Tamba Hali

This fella here was drafted a few hours before my daughter was born, that’s a memory that will always stick out to me. He played with a high intensity motor that I love seeing. One of those guys that it upsets me that he didn’t get to be around for the SB.

11 P Dustin Colquitt

This guy was the best player on the team during some years I should’ve been in my peak fandom. I know we joke he was the MVP on the Edwards’ teams, but to me, he really was.

10 S Eric Berry

I know, we all hate Berry now. But, at one time I freaking loved this guy, and still do. He hit hard. He seemed to have fun out there. And the cancer story puts the icing on the cake. If he could’ve stuck around to win the SB with Pat, he’d probably be in everyone’s top ten, maybe even top 5 chiefs.

9 TE Tony Gonzales

One of my first sports heroes outside of Michael Jordan, I can’t believe I don’t have him higher. Maybe it’s how he left. I don’t know. But I did love watching him play. So much.

8 LG Will Shields

Outstanding dude by all accounts and I’m proud to say he was Chief. And for so long.

7 TE Travis Kelce

I feel like Kelce could be in my friend group. When he was younger, and now that he’s more mature and I guess so am I. It feels weird putting him above Tony, but he’s got a Ring. And that OT run last year really sealed the deal on how much I love this guy. Hope he plays another 5 years.

6 RB Priest Holmes

When we’d play games as teenagers, Basketball, Football, Throwing things into buckets, etc. We almost always played to 31 as a homage to an all-time great RB. Those Dick V years were instrumental in my development as a Chiefs fan, and Priest was my probably my second favorite player for a long time.

5 LB Derrick Thomas

I barely remember him playing, but we share a last name, and he’s this high for obvious reasons.

4 HB Jamaal Charles

Wish there was a way he could be in the HOF. Wish he could’ve been here for the SB. Wish he wouldn’t have been a Bronco. What a great player and a great example to kids everywhere.

3 QB Patrick Mahomes

Is he anyone’s all time favorite yet? It’s hard to not put him at #1 for all he’s done in such a short time. He’s easily in my opinion, the best Chief ever, and that’s just after 4 years. He’s just not my all time favorite quite yet. That will probably change.

2 LB Derrick Johnson

I loved him as a player. I loved him even more as a man. I’ve met with him about a dozen times. Several times doing community service, a couple of times he reached out to me to see how my life was going and if I had my addiction under control. I don’t personally know any of the other men on this list like I do DJ, but I feel like this is the best man to every play for our team. When he went down in 2016, I thought we had a real chance at winning it all, and I almost cried that he wouldn’t be there with us. Of course that didn’t happen, but it sucks he couldn’t hang on a few more years for SB 54.

1 QB Trent Green

I was 11 when he became our QB. I was 13 when we went 9-0, which was the first real excitement I ever experienced as a full-fledged die-hard fan. I loved Trent. Still love Trent. I consider the Bengals game in 06 one of the worst days of my life. Number 10 was always my Jersey number. It’s still my favorite number. He’ll always be my true childhood hero, which locks him in here at number one.

It’s a FAVORITES list, not who you think is the best.

It’s a good thread, Kurt.

Also, the reason why it's hard for me to put Mahomes so high in my heart, is because I still remember the true escape The Kansas City Chiefs gave me as a kid. It was so much stronger back then. I mean, I'm still a die hard fan, I love Patrick, my ****ing wifi is named "Mahomes is a Hero", but I just don't have the emotional attachment to this team that I once did. I lost it pre-mahomes, I think. Maybe we should blame Mark Castle. I don't know.
Makes sense... haters will hate and it seems many think the thread is "best Chiefs ever", but can't ****ing read.

It's not like anyone can tell YOU who YOUR favorite Chiefs are...

Fun DJ story, he was with a group I was a part of helping build a playground at a park in independence and I had my son with me. The kid was under a year old and had colic, and was struggling with it pretty bad that day. Wouldn't stay in his bouncer and wouldn't stop screaming. I was about to leave early, and DJ picked him up and the kid calmed down. That would become a re-occuring theme that day. Every time my son would start to throw a fit, DJ would fly him around on his arm, call him "Super Baby" and the kiddo would be instantly better.

My bad. I was in a hurry and reading on small phone screen and thought it was a list of greatest chiefs not a list of your favorites.

Personal favorites here, not necessarily most accomplished.

1. Patrick Mahomes. We just hoped the kid would be good, and win us a superbowl someday. The kid has us in the running every single year. Hypothetically, if there is a GOD, and if he were to lower himself to affecting sports, he finally answered all the prayers of Chiefs fans with #15.

2. Derrick Thomas. The ultimate pass rusher. Guy could change a game in the blink of an eye. The bane of every quarterbacks existence.

3. Mark Collins. Played corner, then moved to safety, but was ALWAYS around the ball making plays and causing turnovers or recovering fumbles. His INT TD with 12 seconds left in the half against the Raiders, in the black hole, in a win and you're in the postseason game is burned into my memory, as is the dumbfounded look on the face of Art Shell when it happened. Should've taken your 3, Art.

4. Tony Gonzalez. Yeah, I get it. He's an asshole who jumped ship at the end of his career. But lets face it. Carl Peterson was never going to get this team in shape to win anything at the point Tony left. The guy was the heart and soul of the passing game, while being assaulted every play.

5. Priest Holmes. I loved this guy. DV built an offense with Priest as it's engine and if you could simply hold the guy to 100 yards on the day, you would take it as a victory on defense. Briefly held the single season td record, and was just a powerhouse of offensive production.

6. Travis Kelce. Watching him evolve from a hot-headed player prone to getting himself flagged, and possibly ejected, to one of the most unstoppable forces at TE the league has ever seen has been amazing. An unselfish player, both with the football, and in contracts, the guy is just a stud cornerstone of the franchise. If you don't have an 87 jersey, what are you waiting for?

7. Dante Hall. The guy was electric. A threat to score any time he got the ball kicked to him. Flashed some Barry Sanders type jukes in his limited role in the offense. Lot if his best highlights are him destroying donks. Gotta love the guy.

8. Tyreek Hill. Ridiculous speed and ability. Changed the way a entire league approached playing KC. Wasp will live forever in the hearts and minds of the Chiefs faithful.

9. Marcus Allen. Guy could get 1 yard if you put a brick wall at the LOS. Amazing short yardage running back.

10. Joe Montana. I really got into Chiefs football the year the Chiefs went to the AFCCG in Buffalo. My uncle explained who Joe was, what he had done, and this season would be the ONLY season I saw the Chiefs win a playoff game for the next what, 22 years?

Hmm. Maybe I should dislike Joe a little bit. Nah. Suffering through those soul tearing years only made the arrival of Mahomes and his Championship that much sweeter.

I used your criteria. Only players that I saw play. I became a Chiefs fan during the Schottenheimer era, so I'll start there.
I might change reek and green. And Deberg off the list and put marcus Allen. But I’m pretty much there on the rest

I was on the field in high school and got to see DT and the 1990 defense during warmups. Unbelievably giant human beings.
