Going Cellphoneless

ive had a cell for the majority of my life. My first was a bagphone

Over the years Ive wondered about getting by when we were younger and nobody had them. Most days I question the need for constant contact. Ive never been a phone snob and as long as could call and text I was content (bought a $75 phone at walmart and only pay 38 a month). Ive noticed that the only people i talk regulary is my wife and dad but since i started having health shit my wife works from home. If I did need to call someone my wife still has hers. Has anyone here gone without a cell? If so what are the downsides?

i have only went without a week now and havent even noticed.

Am I crazy to go phoneless?

Its insane in 360. Part of the video he is half up the mountain but has to climb parallel to the ground....with no rope. Its a rush just watching and getting to look around. There is an Everest video too that's pretty cool.

I have not gone without a phone, but I did go quite a while with no official cell service. I used the wifi at work and home, and a lot of places have free wifi, so while I was deciding on a plan/carrier, I just went without.

I went almost 2 months before I got into a situation where I actually needed cell service and not just wifi.

In the end, I just decided I didn't need a cell plan. I still use my phone every day, but I am either at work or at home, so I really don't miss it.

I've never owned a cell phone or a beeper in my life.

There's no control group, outside the Amish, for people to see how their behavior has changed for the worse. I was the ADD kid that could never concentrate, never stay on task, could never focus on a project and had to constantly leave to take a break or go smoke.
I honestly have people ask me what I do to help me concentrate. What is it I do to stay so focused. The sad thing is I don't. I'm not. The rest of the world got slowly worse without ever realizing it.
I promise you now that if you go 1 week without ever having a phone on you it will be the most frightening of your life. You'll finally see just how bad drivers really are and how almost no one is actually focused on driving. It really is like telling a drunk to stay sober for 1 week and do all the same things. Hang out with the same people. Go to the same bars sober. It opens your eyes.
And just like the drunk no one will. They'll tell you you're wrong but they won't ever put that phone down. I've quit smoking before. I haven't had a drop of alcohol in over 2 years. You won't see a person put a cell phone down for a month. It won't happen. Junkies quit heroin for longer than a month.

Would not be for me I enjoy being connected and a lot of people in my life are spread out. I also enjoy the world of interesting things at my finger tips...music, books, just general knowledge all out there.

Having said that there is nothing wrong with not having a cell phone if that works for your life and your peace then ditch it!

Am I crazy to go phoneless?

Downsides?

Where to begin?

1. Being broken down on the side of the road
2. You’re out and have a important call to have
3. You’re out of town.

That’s just the simple stuff

Emergencies

1. My mom broke her hip and was watching my son. My mom had a cell phone. So my 3 year son got her phone and called my sister. My dad was out and couldn’t find him My mom ended up at the hospital. He didn’t get home for 2 hours after that fall

2. And one of the main reasons. My mom got sick late Feb/March. Got diagnosed with small cell cancer. (Another story). Monday March 25th my dad had a meeting to go to. My mom told him to go on Sunday the day before and that Monday morning. Well my mom took a drastic turn and she died. My dad wasn’t there. We had no way to contact my dad. He had no phone

This to me is why you shouldn’t go phoneless

For me, finding a location of my destination, or searching for a business "near me", plus having the ability to be there for a friend or loved one in an emergency is worth the costs

I couldn't do my job without my phone. I'm a regional manager for a tech company. I have 48 techs and get calls from many of them on a daily basis. I also have to talk to our dispatch, other managers, my boss, and our customers. I also check and reply from email, and use Teams chat and meetings on it. When I take my Alaska vacation this fall I can get by without it just fine. But not normally.

That's exactly why you don't need one. Everyone has one. There's already a phone at every place in every room. You don't actually have to be the person that presses 9-1-1.

Actually, I've seen more emergencies avoided due to cell phones. People ignoring them because they're constantly being bombarded and they turn them off or decide to screen their calls. More people use cell phones to avoid people than actually connect with them. It's an excuse - a reason to fuel an addiction.

This is the big lie everyone throws out there.

It's happened to me 3 times. I've been out of town, 4 hours from home, and like 10 minutes from Zoner's house years ago during one of his get togethers. My alternator went out and I was stuck on the side of the highway. I turned on my flashers and held my hand up like I needed help. It wasn't 5 minutes before someone pulled over and called him with their phone. I didn't actually have to press the buttons for their phone to work and call him.

You're more likely to die or cause an accident due to playing with the thing than to ever actually have it help you. You're more likely to cause or be in an accident because of that phone than by a drunk driver. It has not made the world safer - it' has cause more accidents.
