Congratulations, Gerry, on a truly fantastic Boone & Crockett trophy

WOW. Once is a lifetime buck right there. Thanks for the info too.

Thats a huge buck.

Shotgun season 1 ended yesterday. Over the weekend, that ended monday for me, our group of 11 had 9 bucks and a handful of does. 4 of the bucks were good ones.

My dad hunted with us for the first time in years, and on the same farm that delivered the buckasaurus, shot himself one that would have been a wall hanger.....one side was busted off about 6" up...otherwise, it would have been a Big 12. It was a scar face too, a real battler....on the side with the antler, there were 3 deep scars and his eye was gouged out. I'd guess he tangled with a small 8 a year or two ago.

2 190ish bucks have been taken, as well as 2 over 160 in the last 2 years. Saturday, 4 guys saw another that will push 200".

Hopefully, he'll find his way under my tree next year.

Can a non-resident Iowanian hunt whitetail or do they have to draw a tag?

There are no deer left in Iowa. No need to apply or lease any land. Its a waste of your time. Montana is beautiful this time of year and has whitetails the size of reindeer.

you can get a tag, I don't think its a drawing....its about $400 for out of state tag I believe.

I might disagree with your football team but hunting is where my other passion is. Montana is a great place to hunt whitetails. I am more of a muley hunter myself but deer hunting is fun regardless.

Anyone ever Bow hunt Bears in Canada?

I got a call a couple of hours ago from a friend and have 2 days to decide.

Manitoba for a week, guided bear hunt 6 days, food and lodging. $2400.

What should I be looking for to help make the decision? The timing is very poor due to some work stuff due a couple of weeks later....

I'd guess Bugs might be getting bad by the Middle of May?

Get a shocking collar and knock him on his ass the first time he starts running a deer. Work him with a pelt if you can't get a live coon to train with.

Don't have a lot of experience with Bear, Iowaian but I have Bow-Hunted Wild Russian Boar. gotta be careful, most times the Bear know you're around and are on their way to see what the hell is going on. They are likely to shove an arrow up your ass if it's not a good shot.

Mid May in Canada is a crap-shoot. Could be 80 degrees, could be 40?
Be ready for both.
Bugs in Canada are a real mother, went up 4 years ago in September for Caribou and was eaten to death. (Manitoba)
The closer to a large body of water the better you are, the cold air even in summer keeps them at bay, (in the morning anyway).

In effort to "keep it real" I have to report on the 2007 turkey season.

The signs were there that it wasn't going to go well, and it didn't. On the way home I stopped by the bow shop, and my string was hosed and bow needed some parts...so it became a shotgun season. Long story short, I didn't get a bird within 50 yards. Saturday morning, as Yung and I sat in what should have been an excellent location...we heard gobbles on the farm accross the road, and across the river on land we'd recently lost to a sale to a video-tv hunter. Lots of gobbles a farm away...and alot of gunshots, that didn't come from us. I have been skunked in the2007 Turkey season.

Now the good news. My buddy(bear hunt buddy) just called....he isn't going this year, but reserved next may...I'm in.

Time to get the bait casters out and sharpen some hooks.....Mushrooms and Bass fishing start this weekend.

I went turkey hunting for the first time this year and I'm sure I'll never miss another season. As soon as I got set up I began hearing the gobbles all around. I called here and there trying not to over do it. Two hours went by and I thought it was over. Then in the distance I heard another gobbler, so I began calling. I would call, he would answer. We played this game for about 30 minutes with each answer I could hear him getting closer. Then he appeared across the clearing coming out of the woods. The rush that came over me was indescribable, I've done alot of upland bird and waterfowl hunting but never turkey or deer. I tried to tell myself to be patient. He spotted my decoy and began slowly working his way in. He was about 35-40 yards away and he began running from right to left. I got nervous and shot, he took a little dive and I jumped up, pumped my gun to finish him off. Sadly, I was too late he was high tailing it for the timber. I fired another shot (which was pointless as far away as he was) then sprinted over to look for a blood trail or some feathers. I found nothing.

I'm so pissed for not just waiting it out. The more I think about it the more I think he was just getting his freak on for the decoy. I don't know, maybe not, but I do know next year if I'm lucky enough for history to repeat itself, I will be more patient and hopefully bring one home.

Good luck! I hope you nail a big one. I just got an email that told me I was expected to work next Saturday. I don’t work Saturdays and I have an elk hunting trip planned for that day. This is going to make thing “a little western” for Mondays meeting.
