I reckon it's a lot of this. There wasn't obviously anything the Lions did differently. Our OL is going to be a work in progress, as are our WRs, and especially with that much chopping and changing leading in. We should've been better because that's the standard, but you can see plenty of quirks that add up.

We should be happy Dan Campbell is a moron though really..

If they had given Gibbs the amount of carries Montgomery had that game wouldn't have looked like that...dude was close to ripping one off.

Goff missed Brown on a 60 yard TD...kinda weird how they seemed to not use their 2 best guys most of the game.

Yeah perhaps that'll be this year's "ah, we kinda gotta fix that". But I don't think Donovan Smith is gonna be the answer to any question either other than the future question "who did we have as that LT stop-gap for a year before we got X?"

I get the Lions' offense was good for the second half of last season, but aside from their OL there was nothing that looked impressive to me. We will play plenty of better teams I think

I just don't get whats up with Moore

Clip after clip of him roasting our starters in camp, praise being heaped on how much growth he displayed by the coaches

And then they basically didn't play him at all in the preseason, which most people could reasonably assume meant they felt they didn't need to see any more of him, that he was "ready to go"

The receivers are open. We just need to clean up execution.
Said this in the game thread. From the stadium, it wasn't hard to see.

And I took some heat for it from the usual suspects. He wasn't sharp at all and I said an All-22 view is likely to expose that.

He left a BUNCH of plays on the field by simply being slow through his progressions. And even on plays he completed, they weren't crisp. The long MVS conversion was late out, the TD to Rice he was slow getting back to that side of the field, the PI to Watson really could've/should've been six with a quicker, better throw.

But remember - I was clearly just trolling...

I guess sometimes he's just not gonna have it, certainly didn't help when it was compounded with the WR's just shitting themselves.

No question - by the end it wasn't on him anymore. In the 4th quarter he wasn't razor sharp, but he was definitely good enough to win. Like, a B/B+ on the Mahomes grading scale in the 4th.

But through 3 quarters he was average to slightly below on even a regular ol' NFL quarterback scale. It was one of those games that Mayfield would have before he collapsed where he'd scramble around and do stuff that looked incredible and productive than it really was.

Shit happens. Ain't gonna beat on him for it. But if for even 1 quarter of football both Mahomes and his receivers had played at/near their true talent level, we win that game. And unfortunately the WRs turned the suck up to 11 right about the time Mahomes finally got his feet under him.

It was a perfect storm of bleh.

We should really thank Campbell though he did a bunch of idiotic shit to make that a close game..

Feeding Montgomery when Gibbs is breaking tackles making guys miss and you can just feel a huge play coming from him...Goff deciding feeding Marvin Jones instead of St Brown is a good idea...punting numerous times when he shouldn't have.

Not even 1 quarter required. They lost by 1 point and had a Pick 6 on a bizarre tip ball play. They win the game if that single play just turns into a normal drop on the ground.

Has anyone offered even a slight tip of the cap to MVS in this thread?

Because he was actually pretty damn good. The only guy I noticed out there who seemed genuinely full speed and looked like a competent NFL WR. He was just moving differently. I wasn't really watching the OL/DL matchup at all and was only looking at routes/combos because I was curious how they'd deal with missing Kelce.

And as I was watching the routes, MVS looked noticeably better than anyone out there, including Rice. He was confident in his movements and in attacking the ball. It's maybe the one positive takeaway I had from the offense tonight. I could tell which one was him before I could pick up the numbers. He looked like a real handful for that secondary and just wasn't getting the ball for some reason.

Mahomes had him down the left sideline once for a likely score and then on a deep crosser that was a DEFINITE score. I mean it was as bad a missed shot as you'll see from a good quarterback. I bet it's in one of these clips out here. I couldn't believe he didn't pull the trigger. He was going from Mahomes right to his left and I swear Mahomes looked right at him - just wouldn't let the ball go.

MVS had me optimistic for him going forward. He looked legit.

EDIT: Well hell, looks like Clay mentioned the play I'm talking about already. Yeah - that was so very bad.

MVS is real NFL WR. That's why he stood out. Nelson Agholor, a JAG would have been better than anything else we trotted out there last night.

That's the kind of play where your QB has to be willing to take the hit to deliver the ball. And really, Mahomes has to understand that with the play call. Because as you noted, asking the TE to stand up the DE is not gonna work. He's gotta have a fast clock with the understanding that a half a heartbeat is all he's likely to get there.

Mahomes knows pre-snap (or at least at the snap) that he's getting a 2-high look and he's gonna have that seam route split the safeties for 15+ yards down the middle. As he hits the back of his drop, he's gotta let it fly. He didn't.

So again - not bad. Just...ordinary. He didn't do Eli shit and whip an arm punt out there, but he didn't do "baddest man on the planet" stuff and deliver the ball in the face of pressure to 'throw the man open' like he does when he's on.
