First glances at several QBs we're going to give a shit about over the next four months. Feel free to set me straight.

DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame
6'4", 230 lbs
26-9 TD-INT, 59%, 2925 passing yards

I get a Cutlerian vibe from this guy. Seems to be built like a franchise QB. Powerful arm, some beautiful passes, perfect bodytype. But he is lacking an "it" factor, is he not? He's not a world-beating, overcome-the-odds, particularly spiriting QB. Looks like he could have an okay career in the NFL in which he wins nothing of consequence.

Mitch Trubisky, North Carolina
6'3", 220 lbs
30-6 TD-INT, 69%, 3748 passing yards

Well if there was one Andy Reid QB in this entire draft, it's Trubisky, isn't it? Super accurate, doesn't take too many risks with the ball, is very mentally tough and very athletic. He's a slam dunk for the Chiefs to trade up for, if he lasts to the 20s, but in a QB-starved NFL with at least 6 new head coaches looking for their QB, there's no chance he lasts to us.

First Look: Scouting Wyoming QB Josh Allen

This season is being billed as the year of the quarterback in college football. There are two premier passers in Southern California (USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA's Josh Rosen) and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner (Louisville's Lamar Jackson) should continue to produce electrifying performances. However, there's a quarterback in the Mountain West Conference who could emerge as the best of the bunch. Here's my scouting report on Wyoming QB Josh Allen:

Josh Allen, junior quarterback, Wyoming

Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 233 pounds (school measurements)

2016 statistics: 209-of-373 (56 percent) for 3,203 yards, 28 TDs and 15 INTs; 142 rushes for 523 yards (3.7 average), 7 TDs.

Game tape watched: Nebraska (Sept. 10, 2016), Eastern Michigan (Sept. 23, 2016), Boise State (Oct. 29, 2016), every pass attempt on third down with 6 or more yards to go from 2016 season (I also saw him play live vs. BYU in the Poinsettia Bowl).

What I liked: Allen has incredible physical tools. He has Joe Flacco's frame/arm strength and he's more athletic than Carson Wentz. Speaking of Wentz, Allen is playing in the same college system that Wentz did, and that's a big plus. He spends a lot of time under center and this isn't a dink and dunk spread attack. He has quick feet in his drop and can easily drive the ball into tight windows down the field. He has a quick, explosive release. He doesn't need a lot of space in order to generate velocity.

Allen makes some incredible throws while on the move (see TD vs. Nebraska) and he's a very effective ball carrier. He can make the free rusher miss and he has a nice blend of speed and power on designed quarterback runs. He is ultra competitive and will fight for extra yards.

Where he needs to improve: Allen needs to be more efficient and display more touch in 2017. I love his aggressive nature, but he forces too many balls and needs to learn to take some easy completions underneath. He needs to sacrifice some velocity and improve ball placement in the quick passing game.

I love Allen's pace away from center, but he needs to work on settling his feet at the top of his drop. This will help his overall accuracy. He will bail out of a clean pocket at times. However, he improved in this area as the 2016 season progressed.

Biggest takeaway: College football is loaded with talented signal-callers, but Allen has the highest ceiling of the entire group. I struggle to come up with a good player comparison for him. He's way ahead of Chiefs first-round pick Patrick Mahomes from a development standpoint and I think he has a much higher upside. I think he's a more athletic version of Flacco. At this point in time, he's more comfortable on drive throws than touch throws. If he can develop his touch and play more efficiently, he will establish himself as the top quarterback in college football.

I can't wait to see him play ... at Iowa on Sept. 2. Allen fell apart against Nebraska last fall, but I expect him to elevate his play against the Hawkeyes. He lost his poise vs. the Huskers, but after talking to him, I know he learned his lesson. If he torches Iowa, the Allen hype train will really start to gather steam.

Mahomes has the most proven HC to develop QB's in the league teaching him.

Mahomes was well ahead of Paxton Lynch last season. The draft doesn't lie. Elite QB coaches wanted Mahomes at 11 and 13 before Andy got him at 10.

Lynch almost fell to the 2nd rd bc nobody wanted him until late.

If those "elite QB coaches" really wanted Mahomes they would've traded up to get him instead of allowing KC to trade up 17 spots. Sure, if Mahomes was sitting there at their pick they might've drafted him, but they weren't going to move up to get him.

KC traded up for Mahomes because they knew they wouldn't be able to get a QB next year. Don't forget, the Chiefs wanted Lynch last year and they knew they couldn't afford to miss out on QB's in 2016, 2017, AND 2018. They were desperate to find Alex Smith's replacement, ASAP.

Also, it's a fact that the Saints wanted him. Somebody that was in the war room confirmed. You can't even dispute that.

The funny thing too is, nobody saw the Chiefs trading up to 10, while everybody could see Denver trading up from a mile away.

An hour before the draft started there were multiple reports saying that the Chiefs were trying to trade up to 10. The Chiefs were calling every team picking between 5-15 trying to find a suitable spot to trade up. The entire league knew what KC was up to.

Elway had the entire NFL thinking he was going to trade for Colin Kaepernick.

There were a plenty of mocks weeks before (maybe even months) that had the Broncos trading up for Lynch. I myself called it months before on CP.

12. TRADE — Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech



This is the only trade I will outright predict. Former Chiefs assistant GM Chris Ballard was a supporter of Mahomes during his time in Kansas City, and GM John Dorsey and Andy Reid trust him. Their first, second and fourth this year and second next year should be enough for a Browns team that wants to move down.

Mocks Sure they're fun to look at, but there are only a handful that really mean anything and they don't come out until a day before the draft.

I never really considered Paxton Lynch as an option because I thought for sure he'd go in the top 10/15 picks. It wasn't until he slipped past the Jets at 20 that I really thought it was a possibility. You have to remember, Denver was picking at 31 and Elway wasn't going to give up an arm and a leg in a trade.

Every NFL team knew that KC was trading up. They may not have known exactly who they wanted, but it was obvious that it was for one of the QB's.

If the Chiefs really wanted Lynch they would have traded more resources to get him with Dorsey's long time colleague from GB John Schneider.

The fact that the Chiefs didn't offer much (or anything) to trade up for Lynch but then gave up what they did for Mahomes tells you all you need to know.

Bottom line is Paxton Lynch was a QB KC liked. Pat Mahomes was a QB they loved.

The Chiefs didn't have a third round pick and Denver did. Dorsey gambled thinking that Lynch would fall two more picks and got burned.
