Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Best argument I've heard for KU.

He seems to think that his school is far too important. K-State, MU and KU are all on the same level when it comes to importance. They all have their strong points and their weak points. In the sport that counts MU and K-State are much closer than KU and KU of course is the top dog in basketball. But for Curly to act all high and mighty is asinine at best.

No I'm not. I've have reason to like both Iowa and Kansas. I don't want to go into detail about it anymore!!!

I was saying as a BASKETBALL fan...the Big East is better. As a Kansas football fan, Pac-10 would be better IMO. So take your poison.

The Big Score: A&M goes it alone

Mark Passwaters
Special to AggieYell.com

What was once unthinkable has, apparently, come to pass. Texas A&M and
the University of Texas, barring the unforeseen or political activity,
will be heading their separate ways in 2011. The Aggies will be the
newest member of the Southeastern Conference.

Aggieyell.com has confirmed through multiple sources that Pac-10
Commissioner Larry Scott met with members of the A&M Board of Regents
in College Station Sunday morning. At that meeting, the Scott was
informed that the board would be declining the conference's offer to
join. Scott was the second conference head to visit College Station
this weekend, with the SEC's Mike Slive being the first.

Aggieyell.com has been told by more than once source that the driving
forces behind the move to the SEC are Board Chairman Morris Foster and
A&M Chancellor Mike McKinney. In part due to a push by former A&M and
Alabama head coach--and current Regent--Gene Stallings, there is a 6-3
board majority in favor of making the move to the SEC.

A&M Athletic Director Bill Byrne was not involved in either meeting
and has not been consulted on the decision by the board. This
decision, sources indicate, will be the board's alone.

The support of Foster and McKinney, both close associates of Gov. Rick
Perry, for the SEC has surprised many observers. Perry, who has
repeatedly said he wanted the Texas teams to stick together--a move
many thought meant he supported the Pac-10 concept. Perry has since
said he intends to stay out of the process, which he may indeed be doing.

In reality, this *could* start to peck away at UT's dominance of the state (albeit, very slowly).
