"I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Romeo, both personally and professionally," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. "He is an accomplished coach, a man of great character and he helped guide our football team through some extremely challenging circumstances this season.

"However, I am embarrassed by the poor product we gave our fans this season, and I believe we have no choice but to move the franchise in a different direction. I will immediately begin the search for the next head coach of the Chiefs. The entire football operation will remain under review, and there may be additional changes to come. No final determination has been made at this point on the future of General Manager Scott Pioli.

"Finally, I want to personally apologize to our fans for our performance this season. We are blessed to play for some of the best and most passionate fans in the National Football League and they deserve better than what we gave them this season. I want our fans to know that I will do everything I can to provide them with a dramatically better team - both next season and in the seasons to come - and our entire organization appreciates their support."

That is a pretty dense take on this; Pioli is there for the new HC's disposal. If the new HC wants him for whatever reason, then fine. If they don't, then Pioli is shown the door.

Clark would be foolish to hire a HC and not have a GM available to them if they need one (read: Chip Kelly).

What is clear is that the new HC will be calling the shots now and not Pioli. If the new HC needs someone to pick up gum wrappers, guess what? Pioli has his duties as GM redefined for him.

Clark handled this perfectly from an owners point of view.

More evidence why it's a huge mistake not to nuke this thing from the start; Pioli is too Machiavellian to take this quietly.

No it isn't. Let's not be ridiculous. The browns were improving immensely then fell apart when modell sold out the team in bellichicks final year. And he has adapted his scheme from Erhardt Perkins to a spread concept to accommodate Brady, is the only parcells disciple to get rid of two gap and change to a 4-3, and he is by far the most involved and successful as any head coach probably in history at influencing personnel and football operations.

Bellichick isn't overrated. What's overrated is when his staff tries to implement his model elsewhere.

They did keep Brady as a 4th QB his rookie year. They saw something in him.

This defies logic.

Scott Pioli destroyed this franchise.

As an owner, I wouldn't want someone as the new HC that would want anything to do with Pioli.

There is literally two reasons why Pioli wasn't fired this morning along with Tannenbaum - who BTW, accomplished a metric ****ton in NY.

He can stay as GM as long as he is removed from all player-personel decisions.
