Let's talk about the 49ers (Super Bowl Edition)

Well Chiefs vs Packers is what I had hoped for, but that's not happening.

Let's talk about Chiefs vs 49ers here.

Not following you...JG had five games under his belt going into this season. He had fumbling problems in the first nine games this season, with 7 fumbles and 4 lost. Over last 9 he has 3 fumbles and 1 lost. I don't doubt that KC's defense has gotten much better as the season has gone on. I haven't rejected that assertion.

Offensively, the only major injury -- and it was major -- was journeyman Ben Garland subbed for Richburg for the first full game. Richburg led the OL and called assignments. Garland has been doing decently, but he's no Richburg. That said, it's not an excuse. Atlanta got healthy in the second half of the season, went 6-2, and were a tough opponent. They held Brees to 184 yards and 18-30 just 2 weeks earlier.

Yeah, I just don't see how the 49ers can try to do that when the Chiefs are in 11 personnel, which they'll be in at least 1/2 the time in the Super Bowl and possibly more, depending on how much they like the 12 personnel package against San Francisco.

I mean, I HOPE that's what Saleh comes up with. But I can't see it.

I wont dig into that statement with an analysis of the games.

I will say, as I have said at multiple points -- SF's D is vulnerable to scrambling QBs who can extend plays. Their DL is quick, not fast (outside of Ford), so guys like Wilson, Murray and Jackson were able to extend plays once they got out of the pocket and create havoc against the 49ers secondary, which is very solid, but not that fast themselves.

I think KC's D is going to create problems for SF's offense, but I'm hoping Shanahan can game plan around it. He's shown himself more recently to be able to recognize what is being thrown at him defensively in the game, and play call to the defense's weaknesses.

Chris Jones is #3 in the NFL with a 19% pass rush win rate...SF has no one in the top 10.
This stat can be hard to find but I LOVE it.

Because it isn't a measure of how well the opposing QB breaks the pocket or how fast the opposing OC gets the ball out.

It's a simple distillation of how often your DL beats their OL. It gets rid of a LOT of noise.

Now 4% isn't nothing because it's an accumulation of every pass-rush snap your DL gets. So if you figure 4 DL and 40 drop-backs, that's 160 aggregate pass rush snaps.

That's 6-7 more pass rush 'wins' over the course of the game. But ultimately it's just 6-7. If you figure a really good pass rush gets a sack, what, 9% of the time? You can figure that maybe 20% of your pass rush wins equate to a sack.

So the difference between the vaunted, world-eating SF pass-rush and the evidently hapless Chiefs pass rush is...one sack? And that's presuming that each team plays against a QB that is similarly effective at escaping pressure. Well Mahomes is substantially better at it than Garappolo is.

I mean this idea that the pass rush is going to be night and day in this matchup is ludicrous. KC's pass rush could very easily be just as impactful on Sunday as SFs and virtually any meaningful review of the numbers or personnel will support that.

So ESPN picked the top 53 players in the super bowl and the 49'ers have 17 of the top 25?

I think it's here but I can't access beyond #2, not that it matters I just find it funny.

It’s all based on those stupid ass PFF grades — the metric that suggests Tyrann Mathieu is barely the 2nd best safety in this game and that Chris Jones is worse than Arik Armstead.
