CBS sports online website article: Patrick Peterson to Chiefs "MAKES SENSE"

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/n...s-blockbuster/

3.Cardinals trade Patrick Peterson to the Chiefs
Chiefs get: Patrick Peterson
Cardinals get: 2020 first-round pick

Patrick Peterson won't come out and say it, but it kind of seems like he doesn't want to play for the Cardinals anymore. Just to give you a little refresher on the Peterson situation: The Cardinals corner demanded a trade back in October, only to apologize for making that demand a few months later, but the situation didn't end there, because now, it looks like he wants to be traded again. Peterson has removed the Cardinals name from all of his social media accounts and he's spent the past month taking passive-aggressive shots at the team. If you've ever watched literally any reality show involving a Millennial, those are usually the first two signs that a breakup is coming.

Peterson even posted a photo of some of his former teammates who are no longer with him in Arizona, and that photo had an interesting caption, "My boys told me to watch out for the snakes in the long grass!"

With a new Cardinals coaching staff now in place, it would make since for them to start fresh with players who actually want to be in Arizona. Clearly, Peterson isn't one of those players.

If the Cards start to shop Peterson, every team in the NFL should call them with an offer. Not only is he a three-time All-Pro corner, but he's also under contract for the next two seasons at the very reasonable rates of $11 million (2019) and $12.05 million (2020).

Although Peterson could get dealt anywhere, we're sending him to the Chiefs and that's because Kansas City has been doing everything possible to beef up a defensive unit that couldn't stop anyone while ranking 31st overall in the NFL last season. After watching his defense choke away the AFC title game, Andy Reid is clearly trying to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Not only have the Chiefs already traded for Frank Clark and Emmanuel Ogbah, but they've also signed Tyrann Mathieu, Alex Okafor and Damien Wilson. If the Chiefs were to add Peterson to the mix, the defense would be nearly as scary as their offense. Also, based on Peterson's Instagram picture, it seems Peterson would probably be pretty excited about the chance to reunite with Mathieu.

Pro Football Talk,

Patrick Peterson trade talk not going away
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 15, 2019, 5:31 AM EDT
Getty Images

Despite the Cardinals’ insistence that Patrick Peterson will remain in Arizona, talk that he could be traded has not gone away.

The Arizona Republic published a roundup of the rumors, which include former NFL player Antonio Bryant continuing his Twitter campaign that Peterson will be traded to the Chiefs.

Bryant’s track record is not impressive. He repeatedly claimed before the draft that the Cardinals would not draft Kyler Murray. His tweets can safely be ignored.

But what can’t be ignored is the fact that Peterson knows about all the talk that he’s unhappy in Arizona — including a report last month that he was angry with someone in the Cardinals’ front office — and he has done nothing to dispute that talk. If Peterson wants to remain a Cardinal, he could settle all this in five seconds by tweeting, “I will play for the Cardinals this year.” He hasn’t done that, even as Arizona’s biggest newspaper runs an article suggesting he may want out.

So although there are no solid reports of any kind of trade deal in place, the trade talk is likely to continue. At least until we hear from Peterson.

If we get da PP we can keep him for two years and when we sign Mahomie we will have to get rid of some talented guys who will give us comp picks in return, rather than waiting and hoping our 1st round guy will work out. But if we get da pp we have 2 years of being clearly the most talented team in the league and damnit I want da PP.

i suspect if he's traded, he's lookin for an extension and some guaranteed $, and i'm ok with that

i also think nothin is gonna come from any of this unless and until he skips a mandatory minicamp to force some minds to change in arizona

PP is at the age where players of his position start losing a step or steps.
The league is getting faster. look at the types of receivers that we've been picking up; speed, speed, and more speed. Do you think we're the only team in the league with a monopoly on ultra fast receivers?
At his current age, PP is not an asset on the same level as Frank Clark or Tyrann Matthieu.

Finally, as to your wants, you would be well-advised to think of the Chiefs as the old Soviet Union. Needs will be met on the basis of the whole.

There have been numerous CB's that played well as they aged, it's not like he's just some sprint guy relying on his speed, he's very good at what he does.

Ever since we traded for Frank Clark, this board’s overall opinion on 1st round picks has changed dramatically.

Many (probably most) hated the idea of trading a 1st for Clark before the deal happened. Then the rumor of a 1st plus more came out and people became okay with just the 1st rounder. And now that the trade went through, I hear all the time things like:

“Who would we have drafted that’s better than Clark?”

“Let me show you a list of players drafted 16-32 in the past many drafts...”

“1sts are overrated. In half the drafts the guys you can get are borderline 2nd rounders.”

“Get the guy you want. Clark was the guy we wanted.”

Those can be valid points, and trades involving 1st round picks aren’t all bad (in moderation) for a team.

However, doing this multiple years in a row does have its consequences. If we use a 1st for PP, that will be 3 straight years without having one. Yes, I know what we got out of the deal (especially Mahomes) but continuing to trade away 1sts isn’t going to help him the way he needs.

A better question may be to ask, “Can we realistically expect to reload every year and keep every hole on the team filled each of Mahomes’ seasons? The answer seems to be no, looking at the careers of Brady, Rodgers, and other stars who have been with their teams 10 years or more. The talent pool fluctuates. It has to. Not even the Patriots could get Brady everything he needed each year. Remember when Kenbrell Tompkins was his WR1?

I’m not eager to get to that point with Mahomes, I’m only bringing up concern that we need to keep those type of seasons to a bare minimum. And it’s why we are probably waiting out the Cardinals.

And good for Veach for doing that. Let Keim and the ownership continue to piss off Peterson. Let them struggle with their unhappy vet for awhile. Let them come to us. They know we’re probably interested. If that takes us into the regular season, so be it

I am of the opinion that we need to try to win now I(2019/2020). I can live with leveraging the future a bit. Go through a mini rebuild from 2021-2023. Then be back in the thick of things for Mahomes early 30's.

This town needs A Super Bowl before we worry too much about the future, or try to become New England 2.0

If we trade for PP we're the best team in the NFL by far.

The best offense with a top 5 defense.

I'd be shocked if we didn't win back-to-back.

like I've said a thousand times, using the first round pick and packaging it to acquire an elite player who is coming up on their extension is a perfectly fine idea. All you've done is bypassed the growing pains and the learning years.
But once Mahomes gets paid, the Chiefs will not be in a position to do multiple acquisitions like that every season. So, they better get used to using that late first-round pick and learning how to make it work.

It depends on team and situation in my view. To a team in their bowl window that is drafting at the back of the round a proven player that is 25 is going to have more value than a dude drafted at 30.

On the other end if you are a team that is coming off of being 5-11 you shouldn't be trading picks because that player isn't going to put you over the top.

I have come to realize that draft picks and cap space are really valued when you have them yet somehow when you use them people get pissy about it.

There is an argument for both sides obviously but the Chiefs right now need players to be good right now, they can't wait 3 years for a DE to be a good player.

We need to spend money while we can. We're not going to be able to trade and pay FA like Clark, Honey Badger etc.. when Mahomes is paid. When Mahomes starts making serious bank, then we can look at more cost effective options.

This is a rare opportunity. Waiting for the price to go down as the situation in AZ deteriorates is the right move, but we need PP.

The SB is right there.

As long as this team has Pat Mahomes and a competent defense, the super bowl will always be "right there".
