2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: ![]() Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

The best part is that now I feel I can actually by stuff specific to players since they are at players finally sticking around for at least a few years who are actually decent. In the past I would get generic shirts but never anything with a name since we were filled with journeymen, one year stop gaps, or retreads. Now I really love my Escobar, Moose, and Butler stuff. Need to get Gordon, Hosmer, and Salvy as well as Myers soon. |

As many know, metrics like UZR and Dewan's +/- depend on observer evaluations of batted balls. Frankly, Escobar and Gordon have some really screwy ratings (I know, I know, 1/2 a season is a really small sample size for defense). To cite from my latest study:
Escobar, Gordon and Defensive Metrics To me, there also could be even more insidious forms of bias at play---forms that are more personal and directly related to perceptions about the player closest to the batted ball. In short, I am suggesting that Escobar's sudden reduced range could be an unconscious "backlash" created by raised expectations about his fielding ability from such things as his "SS Jesus" knickname to his highlights on ESPN's Web Gems. [Note that 2011 SS Gold Glove winner Eric Ayabar also has a -UZR (-1.4) in 2012 after he won last season's award despite a pedestrian 1.2 UZR] In Gordon's case, he caught many observes by surprise when he won the 2011 Gold Glove for his defensive work in LF (most sabermetric fans expected the award to go to Brett Gardner who led all of baseball with a UZR of 25.2, dwarfing Gordon's 9.6). Gordon's "rep" was that he earned the award mostly for his cannon arm (AL league leading 20 outfield assists) rather than his range. Gordon's "new" fielding prowess gives him the highest UZR of any LF in baseball and a UZR/150 much closer to Gardner's outstanding 31.0 from 2011. Is it possible that many observers believed Gordon to be a statue in LF and now overrate him when, by the eyeball test, he does not meet that prior expectation? Does this smell like confirmation bias (he's a Gold Glover, let's rate him like one) to anyone else---or am I the only cynic in the room? [Note: Gordon's UZR is 2nd for all positions. Is a LF really saving more runs than anyone else besides Seattle SS Brendan Ryan? This after Gardner saved more runs from LF than anyone else in 2011. Is LF the new premium defensive position?] To see full article, click link below: Last edited by JohnnyV13; 07-04-2012 at 05:24 AM.. |

My first Royals game was with my Dad in the old and now demolished Municipal Stadium in 1969. As a tiny tot, I have no recollection of the game, as we played the Twins. All I know is that it was a bond that my Dad and I shared and I was forever hooked.
I hate that we have been mired down in a pile of shit over the last 20 years, but I can't and won't stop caring, no matter how many tantrums I throw. It's a part of me, a part of my past. It's a link to my childhood that brings up so many fond memories that it would be impossible for me to abandon them. I just want this organization to care as much as I do. Foolish, I know, but it's that hope that keeps me hanging on.

My first game was with my dad when I was less than a year old, and then we continued to go to quite a few every year up until a couple years ago.

Best thing about that is that it wasn't against some shlub who shouldn't be stealing bases (cough... Jeff Francouer... cough). It was against a premium basestealer, who had a good lead and got a good jump.
