***Official 2024/2025 KC Royals Offseason Thread***

Royals went from 56-106 to 86-76.

Made the playoffs. Took out the Orioles on the road.

Lost in four games to the Yankees by 4 runs.

Finally got a bullpen.

Had two pitchers who will finish in the top five for the Cy Young.

Bobby Witt jr turned into a superstar likely being an MVP #2 to that phag in NY.

Salvy just kept doing Salvy stuff.

Vinnie came back from shoulder surgery and had a helluva year.

Cole Ragans had a full season. His arm didn’t fall off. He’s probably top five for Cy Young.

Seth Lugo is gonna finish top five for Cy Young. He’s like Rick Reed. And he’s ours for at least another season.

Brady Singer will get his next time with arbitration. And I’m ambivalent, but I know it’s damn hard to find healthy arms who could be be better as a 3/4 starter.

Michael Wacha was more than everything we could’ve ever wanted, but I say let that man fly unless he wants to take a dumb contract, which he won’t do.

That gives us Alec Marsh who was pretty great for his role.

And we have Wright coming in, plus Bubic who could start.

But this team needs another bat and wingman for Bobby. It’s perfect that Juan Soto would fill many roles, but it ain’t happening.

Adames is someone I like. And we can dangle Massey/Garcia. Just a thought.

This team…. I hope they go into the offseason working hard, and I hope they got the glitter out of their eyes.

Good team with obvious weakness, and a perennial superstar ready to erupt….

Sherman and JJ should be on the phone soon

Stearns isn't going to give him away. This notion that JJ has floated that we are going tade for bat, I find puzzling. We had one chip (Singer, who in retrospect we should have held onto for a couple more weeks after seeing he free agent starting market) and we used it... who else do we have that has value to that won't cripple our team by giving up.

Freddy? Maybe? He's a backup catcher.

Our system is still anemic, especially in the pitching department.

I just wonder what they think they have of value that we can give up after Singer.

I saw some Mets folks talking about relief help, specifically lefthanded relief help. Zerpa, Lynch both would fit the bill. I think KC could comfortably move from either.

The Royals also have a nice little surplus of C options behind Blake Mitchell in Carter Jansen (whose defense has taken a step forward, according to reports I've seen). Jensen is lined up pretty closely to Blake Mitchell in terms of ETA, and youngster Ramon Ramirez has had an exciting early return (KC signed him for like $59k, and he has surpassed expectations as a hitter and receiver).

Zerpa or Lynch for Baty would feel like a steal. It's possible it doesn't work, of course, but a year ago the Mets would have hung up the phone, laughing, at that suggestion.

Baty's playing time was inconsistent this year because the Mets were in contention and had a lot of competition for options. He might get a better "run" of PT and chance to get his feet under him in KC, where he has less competition for PT.

Fair point, but he put up a similar season the year before in a much larger sample.

Career AAA numbers are .273/.368/.531 over 416 PAs with 52:92 BB:K ratio. That’s about a 12 percent walk rate and 24 percent K rate.

And that includes a tough stretch at AAA in 2024.

It is possible he has some flaws that keep that promise from showing at the MLB level. It’s also possible the up-and-down uncertainty of 2024 messed up his plate performance at all levels.

If KC could get him in exchange for a lefty reliever it’s a no-brainer move.

I don't think pursuing a former consensus top 50 prospect with five years of control remaining and a strong track record of consistent success with no red flag markers is a half measure.

He's had about 500 MLB at-bats stretched over 3 seasons that haven't been great, but there would be a lot of reason to dream about him reaching his upside/potential in KC.

Feels Brett Phillips-y. Who is probably working at Burger King now.

Last I heard, Phillips was in the Yankees organization attempting a comeback as a pitcher. Apparently, he's hitting upper 90's with his fastball and is turning some heads.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's true. I do recall him having a hell of an arm out there in the OF.

You'd have to search but Phillips absolutely had outfield throws at 100+ mph. Not sure if he ever did that with the Royals though.
