Should CJ95 continue to freelance?

We've seen by now that Chris Jones has free reign to line up on the d line wherever he likes, moving someone else inside to his d tackle spot if he wants the end.

D line has looked pretty poor in a lot of situations rushing the passer.

Today, against a good o line and mobile qb, the d line without Jones was all over Russell Wilson the entire game and sacked him 5 times.

The d line was consistent all game, with the right guys in the best positions.

Kinda feels like Jones should stay put at his d tackle spot where nobody can match his production, and just let our ends rush from where their natural position is. They don't have the talent to move inside just to satisfy Jones desire to rush the passer from a more forgiving spot.

Broadly I'd want him playing at DT. If there's a weak link at OT, and specifically against power, then yep he can switch across to take advantage. But I don't want guys like Uche being forced inside just to accommodate some freelancing. Same with FAU. These are DEs and a guy like FAU needs reps there. Far less interested in developing his versatility than his ability to win from the edge at this level

Exactly. He’ll be inside when it’s needed. No reason to change up what’s been a great defensive season.

He's better inside. I understand HE may want to kick outside, but we have guys out there now, so it's not needed.

It’s funny that some of the people who are shunning this thread also wanted to rest Mahomes the last two weeks. It’s better convo than that bullshit panic.

VARSITY
Do we know how many snaps Jones is lining up outside vs. inside? I tend to agree with the OP, but it’s not clear to me how many times per game this happens. Chris is an unmatched dominator on the inside, and as mentioned we have guys that are good on the outside already.

I bet when the playoffs start. That gets reeled in significantly. But Spags also likes interchangeable players.

The nice thing is that we have multiple DL that have been kicking inside for years. Omenihu, Karlaftis and Danna have all done so before the recent times when it’s happened more and more. Attacking weaknesses on the fly is what makes this defense so good.

Reggie White kicked inside and out, as well and Chris has a similar ability to impact games.

Keep offenses guessing and having to adjust on the fly.
