Eric Bieniemy is Available Again!

Sources: Eric Bieniemy out after one season as UCLA's offensive coordinator

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/sources...174950381.html

Nick Bromberg

Eric Bieniemy’s UCLA tenure lasted a season.

The Bruins are moving on from Bieniemy, sources told Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. The former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and NFL running back joined UCLA’s staff in 2024 as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach following the hire of Deshaun Foster as the team’s head coach.

UCLA went 5-7 in 2024 and was 3-6 in the Big Ten. The Bruins averaged 5.4 yards a play and scored just 18.4 points per game. Only eight teams across the top level of college football averaged fewer points than the Bruins and UCLA scored more than 20 points just twice all season.

Bieniemy, 55, interviewed multiple times for NFL head coaching positions while he was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. He joined Andy Reid’s staff in 2013 when Reid became the Chiefs’ head coach and was the team’s running backs coach through the 2017 season. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 as Patrick Mahomes became the team’s starting quarterback.

However, Bieniemy never got a head coaching job in the NFL and moved on from the Chiefs after the 2022 season. Five NFL teams had job openings that offseason and he interviewed for just one.

Bieniemy became the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, but he spent just one season with the team as the organization went through wholesale changes following the season. Washington’s new ownership group changed the coaching staff and hired Dan Quinn as the team’s head coach with former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury serving as the offensive coordinator for No. 2 overall draft pick Jayden Daniels.

Before coaching for the Chiefs, Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Colorado, for two seasons and had served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings. It’s unclear just where Bieniemy’s next coaching stop will be and it’d have been hard to fathom four years ago that Bieniemy would be leaving his third job in three seasons at the end of 2024 instead of being the head coach of an NFL team.

I said all along…his yelling and cussing style doesn’t sit well with some younger players that expect to be coddled. The ones that stick, build mental toughness …but some players will disconnect due to his style.

That said, I’d take him back in a heartbeat. I do think the team has been missing something since he left. Put him at RB coach and let him bring the dawg out.

I bet Hunt would love to have him in the RB room.

I thought he'd be good in college where he could yell the bejeezus out of you knowing you can move on in 2-3 years. He's one of those coaches who can get the best out of you until you get tired of the shtick. Apparently not.

Maybe a humbling experience and good chance for him to go back to an assistant coaching role which is well within his wheelhouse.

UCLA Fires Bienemy (LA Times)

Eric Bieniemy received a hero’s welcome upon his arrival in March, co-workers lining the hallway inside UCLA’s practice facility to serenade him with applause.

The new offensive coordinator removed one of his Super Bowl rings so that DeShaun Foster, his new boss, could inspect it.

“It’s time,” Bienemy said that day, referring to his plans to do big things. “It’s time.”

Nine months later, after a season in which the Bruins’ offense ranked as one of the worst in the nation and several top players regressed from their previous form, Bieniemy’s boss decided it was time to move on.

In a development that showed both an admission of making the wrong hire and a willingness to quickly pivot, Foster severed ties with Bieniemy on Thursday after their one season together produced across-the-board struggles on offense.

Foster secured an intriguing replacement, agreeing to hire Indiana quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri after the end of the Hoosiers’ season, according to one person close to the situation not authorized to publicly divulge the information because the move has not been made official.

Sunseri, who will turn 36 later this month, was one of the architects of an Indiana offense that’s been among the best in the country, averaging 43.3 points per game while vaulting the Hoosiers toward an expected appearance in the College Football Playoff.

UCLA averaged less than half that figure under Bieniemy. The Bruins ranked No. 117 in the country in total offense (328.8 yards per game), No. 126 in scoring offense (18.4 points per game) and No. 130 in rushing offense (86.6 yards per game). The Bruins’ inability to run the ball was especially maddening given that both Foster and Bieniemy had success as running backs in the NFL.

Several top players entered the transfer portal after the team’s final game last weekend, including quarterback Justyn Martin, running back TJ Harden and slot receiver Logan Loya. The Bruins also lost high school recruits Madden Iamaleava and Jace Brown on Wednesday when they signed with Arkansas amid rumors of Bieniemy’s dismissal.

Bieniemy’s agent, Jason Fletcher, labeled Bieniemy’s departure as a mutual parting of the ways in a statement, saying the former offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders was still being paid by the NFL team and was assisting Foster for one season before making a planned return to the NFL in 2025.

But that statement doesn’t jibe with the terms of a two-year contract that included $550,000 in retention bonuses if Bieniemy remained on the job through the end of July. It also doesn’t hold up given that Bieniemy recruited for the Bruins and did not have a new job to announce at the time of his departure Bieniemy was set to receive a $180,000 hiring bonus on Saturday.

After flaming out in his one season with the Commanders, Bieniemy, 55, was bombastic in his return to UCLA after having previously served as the running backs coach under Karl Dorrell. He routinely unleashed a flurry of expletives and biting one-liners that carried across the practice field. Players said Bieniemy’s plays were wordy and hard to learn, and the results reflected those struggles.

Veteran quarterback Ethan Garbers and Harden both failed to replicate their production from the previous year under coach Chip Kelly, who also ran the team’s offense.

Bieniemy was also pivotal in the hiring of offensive line coach Juan Castillo after they had worked together with the Commanders. UCLA’s offensive line was one of the team’s most underperforming position groups last season, allowing 34 sacks and failing to open enough holes for the running backs. ESPN reported that Castillo is not expected to return next season.

Bieniemy’s UCLA offense never remotely resembled the ones he helped construct with the Kansas City Chiefs while winning Super Bowls in 2020 and 2023.

Foster is expected to make other changes to his staff, including the addition of Demetrice Martin to help coach the secondary. His biggest move may be bidding farewell to the offensive coordinator who didn’t live up to the hype.

It wasn't Bienemy's offense. It was Mahomes, and Bienemy lived off the glow.

Someone can also just be terrible at it, too. I once had a manager who yelled quite a bit and after a while it would make me laugh, which is probably the opposite effect that he was going for.... if you're just yelling to yell and you're always yelling, that doesn't build mental toughness in others, it just makes you look like a clown with anger issues.

This is utter nonsense. No white OC or DC with anything close to EB's resume has never got a HC job in the NFL since the league was created.

Joe freaking Judge got a job ffs. Dan Campbell was a freaking TE coach and the current head coach's at Cinci and the Vikings had minimal roles at the Rams compared to EB but still got those jobs.

He was screwed over. Plain and simple. Meanwhile Pederson and Nagy got jobs.
