alot of mine were Navy related as a 19/20yr old lad.
being able to step out of the superstructure of the Aircraft carrier, and witness flight ops / take offs / traps in person was definitely RAD. I was an office guy so I wasn't qualified to be on the flight deck during ops, but was able to go out with the Maintenance Chief in our sqaudron and basically just stand against the superstructure. even manged to peak out from one of the cat walks on the exterior to get closer to some of the catapults during the cat shot. acquiring 13 GPS satellites in the middle of the night / pitch black on vultures row of the Carrier with a big GPS unit (Circa 1997); to then take data back down to the CIC so pilots could load data into their bricks/mission planning system; then that next morning dropping the first successful GPS guided munition (JSOW) in battle (at least that's what they said); and seeing the imagery pass from the satellite a few hours later for the battle damage assessment. Seeing an old classmate of mine from A-School in the Navy who went on to, and Completed BUD/S; while my F/A-18 squadron was on detachment at Naval Strike & Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) in Fallon NV; He was there for his post BUDS SEAL training with his Team; and somehow myself and my Intel officer got invited out to the field with them. Middle of the night, dark ass desert; they were practicing lazing targets for the F/A-18's above. Watching them rope (making a circle) with green lazer for the pilot to acquire where they were at on the ground, and hearing the pilot confirm their location over the radio. green lazer off, then the lazing of the actual target (an empty 18 wheeler). Hearing the jet (couldn't see anything at night) roar over us after it had passed us. Then about 20-30 seconds later a huge white flash that lit up everything....then a huge sound wave finally getting to us about 2 or 3 miles from the target. Watching Top Fuel Funny Cars and Dragsters in the pits warm up / set the clutch with the nitro on. And watching a Top Fuel race of course. lots of Rad stuff.

Some things that are rad to me, are likely "uh, pass" to the majority of society.
While in the Army back in 2004 I participated in the 60th commemorative jump into Normandy. I was a Jumpmaster on a C-130, and we were jumping into St. Mere Eglise, on a DZ used during the war. It was pretty fookin' rad to be standing in the door overlooking the French countryside slipping by, then rotating back inside the aircraft and seeing 64 of my guys looking back at me, hooked up and ready to jump at my command. It was impossible not to think about hundreds of C47s dodging AA fire, paratroopers spilling out of burning aircraft, towns on fire below, and seeing tracer fire arc up toward you-- all around the very same space I was sharing only separated by a sliver of time. I burned that memory, and that feeling, into my hard drive. Last edited by Cheater5; 06-09-2020 at 07:20 AM.. |

When I bought 100 shares of Apple in 2008 and it split 7/1 about 5 years ago. Also felt pretty rad celebrating 20 years with my girl last November.

I got an autographed picture of Carrie Fisher back in like 1978. She was standing next to the Millennium Falcon with a blaster. It was signed "Galactically yours, Carrie Fisher". I was 7 or 8. But...my parents moved to a rental for about a year and somehow that picture got lost. But it did happen...I swear it.

Celebrated 25 years with my wife on Aruba. I was sitting on the beach thinking how we had no business being here, given that we were in HS when she got pregnant and almost divorced like 3 times in the early days. That was indeed rad.

3 years ago, I finally was able to see the legendary Sir Paul McCartney live in concert. After 3 straight hours of performing, he wrapped up the second encore with Hey Jude. The last 4 minutes with the crowd singing were magical.
This obviously isn't the concert I attended, but it's a perfect example: |
