Special Treatment? I don't think so....

Tonight I had an admit and was told "This woman is a Nurse Practitioner, that works for Dr. so and so and if you don't mind just make sure she is taken good care of, show her special attention in what you do and care for her."

I responded "Are you shitting me?!!, she will be treated no better than any of my other patients I don't care if she is the president of the United States"

This shit makes me sick, thinking someone deserves to be treated better or shown more attention because of their job status. I know this probably happens in every profession, say you work in a plant and the General Manager or the President shows up of course there are ass kissing going on, but in the medical field with sick patients its different everyone deserves to be treated the same. I will not treat her badly or ignore this patient but damned if she will be getting treated any different.

There are always reasons to give certain people a little extra...Maybe this woman was a very kind caretaker of others throughout her career.....maybe the guy that bought the Viper is a friend of the owner, or is looking to buy a fleet of trucks for his business....Maybe he trades every 6 months.

I take care of all of my clients, but there are a couple that verbally advertise the hell out of my business and have gotten me quite a few jobs.....Guess what, I'll drop something to help them, even if its' a 10 mintute phone call. It's good business to keep some people happy.

I read it as her saying she would not treat your cousin's grandmother any worse or any better than the practitioner...which is what I would expect. Sure, I can see where emotional attachment could be felt if it was something like a fireman vs. a murderer, but how would you feel if that grandmother was dropped in the shower and left there because the nurse that was caring for her was there alone because some VIP patient had 3 assigned to watch her ass and no one was available to help in the first place and had to be located to come and help when someone that was not ambulatory fell in the shower and had to be lifted out without the use of the chair.

In my Services Marketing class we were taught that having different levels of service above and beyond the minimum acceptable level helps to add value to your service offerings. Treating your high-end/repeat clients better than everyone else is just good business.

Sucking up to a client by buying them a higher caliber of meal and beer is a bit different from giving someone medical attention.

And there's a difference between going above-and-beyond the call of duty when the normal level of service is already excellent, and treating someone "special" at the expense of other people who get shoddier treatment. If you truly "take care" of all your clients, then you're in the former situation, and it's perfectly fine. But the implication I got from the OP is that they implied the latter situation, which is insulting.

And I agree with the general viewpoint that, in public places, people who are rich/powerful/famous should not get "special" treatment simply because they're rich/powerful/famous... at least not unless they're going to a place that caters to them for those reasons. I can't stand famous people who think they can break the law because of who they are, or famous athletes who try to talk their way out of a ticket because they happen to be athletes, or line-cutters at restaurants who think they're entitled to do so because they were the fourth-billed start in a crappy movie, etc.,.

When we had cops, fireman and nurses come into the ER/ICU they did get extra effort. But, just because they recieved that doesn't mean the gang banger that comes in with a gun shot doesn't get the teams best effort.

You don't understand human nature? They bring a cop into the ER injured in performing his duties as a cop(gunshot, injured during an arrest etc.) You have got 20-30 cops out in the hallway wanting to know how their buddy is doing. Then they bring in a gangbanger involved in a drive by shooting. Do you really think they will get treated the same by the staff, regardless of policy?

On the flip side I've spent many hours trying to save the life of someone who just murdered an innocent person.

If you're a 3rd shift nurse, I have no doubt at all that you have spare time, it's simply the nature of the night shift (my wife was one for about a year before going back to days).

Dedicate some of that free time to a colleague. Same team - why so indignant about helping out someone that has to fight the same wars you do?

I gotta say, after seeing most of your posts regarding your job, I have to believe you're about the shittiest nurse to ever 'grace' the profession. You have a massive sense of entitlement and an incredibly inflated sense of self-worth. I'm sorry that your job requires that you work with people that aren't feeling well; I'm sure they'd just as soon not have to deal with you as well.

You just strike me as an incredibly unhappy person and that is absolutely poison in your profession. You can come along and tell me how great you are and how happy you are all you want, but nothing you've said/done on this board would support it so I'm inclined to ignore it.

I think you are being over sensitive here. People tend to want to watch out for their own. I'll bet if you were sick someone would say "take good care of badgirl she......".

I understand the difference.

I look at it this way. A medical professional(nurse, whatever) has a list of tasks. Lets assume they perform each of those tasks equally well for all patients, as they should.

The difference? Maybe you go the extra mile to make sure Mrs soandso is comfortable, listen for an extra couple of minutes....open her orange juice without being a shithead about it.

I've been in hospitals where I knew and had dated some of the nurses. The Extra...is 5 extra people stop in when they're between tasks to say hi, ask if you need anything, or make some small talk to take your mind off of what is happening. Its very small things that make the difference. I doubt the guy was asking badgranny to dip into her oxycontin stash to share.
