Cost of electricity

I was wondering how come the electricity in my office was not lower after I made some serious improvements/changes.

I compared 12/21 bill vs 6/22. I about floored me.

Holy crap that is a jump.

The company is Evergy.

This will probably end up in DC. But there are a number of posts related to money in the lounge.

Do electric co's charge more for commercial property than residential?

The variation in rates from state to state is interesting. As I understand how things work here in PA, PPL is a generator and THE supplier. But you can choose another generator at different rates.

Years ago I chose an all renewables generator which cost more than the PPL rate until this past month when the PPL rate went up. Now I am paying less for renewables than PPL is charging for whatever combination they are offering.

I see what some of you are paying and I am astounded. As much as the change in my rate is atrocious, what some of you all have been and or are paying now is just mind boggling.

In my 20 years as a homeowner/renter in PA I can't ever remember paying less than 5 cents/kWh.

What is the cause of such a big disparity and I wonder if there is any recourse. This thread had me shopping new suppliers and no new rate deals are lower than the new PPL rate (which is expected to go up in December).

Yes, a few residentials' solar installations have battery packs. But most don't because they add a lot to the cost.

we built a home in 2020, and added extra panels cause we knew we were putting in a pool. If I recall correctly, the tesla power wall was another 15-20K........and that only buys you 1-2 extra days of power, were the grid to go down.

It's a racket, and the energy companies are going to get exactly the revenues they want, one way or another.

I'm on Evergy and those seem really cheap.

This was my top line item last month followed by .07xxxx per kwh. I've not looked back at prior months but I'd expect winter would be lower demand normally than summer (?)

edit: paid the exact same amount per kwh in 06/21

Which lines up with my initial thought that my bill hadn't changed much. Maybe it depends on what Evergy plant or location is serving you?

You can shop suppliers? I figured everyone was like me, where it's a monopoly and we rely on the utilities commission to protect us from getting the R. Kelly treatment.

I don't remember how many years ago they started allowing it (its been a while), but yes, we are allowed to shop for a rate, term, and mix of energy sources that suit us best.

I’ve gone completely solar….it’s been 15 months now. My Evergy bill was $7.92 last month and it looks like it’s going to be even less this month (fewer cloudy days). Highest bill this year was $24 and change. Electricity is going to keep rising whether we like it or not. So it’s best to find a way to keep your cost low and predictable
