Without knowing the ignition system.... (POINTS???)

I would say primary ignition fault so coil, wire, cap. By pulling the wire and creating a gap causes the coil to go to max output. With points 25K- 30K volts. GM HEI systems used t run .060 gap and when worn the gap increased causing coils to overheat and fail inside the cap sometimes taking friends along to the trash can.

I would say your father cured a case of VD (voltage drop) by pulling the wire causing the coil to spit out closer to 30K Volts (bolts).

What was the problem with the cap?

"If it was fixed by a farmer you know it was by mistake. " My "ex" father in law.

So it was missing hard and dad proceeds to pull the coil wire out of the cap and make it arc to the connector in the cap. Motor lines out and runs fine. So we set out after parts and I ask him what the actual **** happened there? He said, “I don’t know the science but dad (my grandpa) always said if you have a weak connection somewhere pull the wire and make it arc and it will amplify it and make it run.”

Is he feeding me full of shit? I’d think that’s backassward if I didn’t see it with my own two eyes.

I think it’s right because he bypassed the resistor and made it run better (more bolts to the coil)

Has anyone ever heard of this?

So pulling the wire makes the coil puke out a hotter spark? I mean that makes the most sense. He pulled the wire out and it lined out I was perplexed.

I think he finally put electronic ignition on the damn thing, but I can hear him saying, "points aren't so bad." ****ing points. I ran points for 1 year on a similar 300 Ford and promptly bought an electronic ignition.

There was a crack in the cap that I think was the problem. But those things do wear out. My 300 Ford had a cap on it for a long time that worked OK, but it would drown out in the rain. Finally I just said **** it and bought a new cap and by God it will sit through a lot more rain. I looked and the posts in the cap were a lot thinner than the new one. I had kept the corrosion off, but the damn thing just wore out.

I believe its the same concept as when you gap plugs. A wider gap causes a hotter spark but its weaker when it comes to the power of the voltage. It will work under less of a load but under a heavy load it will shit out.

I assume the motor was idling or something close when he did that.

That crack about a farmer fixing it by accident is pretty funny.

But my shit runs. Dad is a better mechanic than I am but I spend a shit load of money on parts.

My ass can't afford down time.

Yeah, He had the clutch pulled and there wasn't a lot of RPMs. Our wells don't take much horsepower these days.

so I've had this 70 cutlass convertible in one of my buildings for probably 9 years. It was last tagged in 2002. An old lady owns it and couldn't pay the storage fees on it. I saw her and asked what she was going to do with it and long story short I stored it all this time for free.

Well she decided she's ready for it and I moved everything around it to grey it out. Stuck a battery in it and it fired up and idled after about 15 seconds of cranking.

The top is ragged ragged ragged out but went right up and down.

I drove it to her house and dropped it off after work.

Today's gas wouldn't run after a ****ing year...

And the old hag had some nerve. She told me she wanted to see if it would run Monday and called me Tuesday morning while I was at training camp and chewed on me for not getting it dug out yet. Like yelling style. Had been to the shop and gotten pulled over for driving so crazy when pulling out. Chewed out my employees and them called my wife's cell and then mine. I answered and politely let her know what time it was.

Some ****ing people... I was sure to tell her i had stored that car for 9 years and I wasn't going to cancel my plans to get it going now. Lol

That's AWESOME! I've heard people sometime add a little warm oil on the top end and take the distributor cap off to let the engine turn for a while before letting it fire. Did you do anything like that?

Well that's Detroit power for you...

Watching the process they go through to start an F1 car (without breaking it) is simply amazing. They need to go the Detroit route..
