Well, they were hell bent on making a trade, at least Wilson is only 33. The players they gave up can be replaced.

What are the chances that Russ can regain his form? He was not great last year and a lot of people were saying he'd lost a step - important for a qb who uses his legs as much as he does.

I think last year he was injured and his O-L sucked. Denver's O-L is not good either, but he will be healed so he'll play better.

yep, still 3rd in the division if I were a betting man. Giving up 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and Fant is a steep price too. Not a move I would have made. I would have run out Locke this year and gone for a QB in next years draft. Now they have no draft capital.

Think of how stoked we'd have been about this 5 years ago. Not everyone can have a 26 yr old superstar QB under contract for a decade. As options go, Wilson's a good one. Perhaps a very good one still - hard to say. But I really would be a little reticent about the competitive window here. I think the Broncos might actually be best served to convert his salary to bonus this year, get as much cap space as possible and just attack the FA market. Giving up a lot of organizational capital to get a QB and then simultaneously diminish your roster around him while making it harder to build from within is a problem when said QB is 33 yrs old. You don't have a shitload of runway in front of you. It's a solid FA group, so if you can make a splash in it this season, you'd be wise to do so. Then the concern becomes the lack of an owner as the FA period opens. Who actually decides they're going to cut these checks for signing bonuses? present owner doesn't want to write checks he doesn't have to when it won't impact their selling price. Current owner...isn't in place, so THEY won't be writing any checks. You can't get into the FA market without being willing to throw around some real cash. It's how you get those 'cheaper' deals - an owner willing to write a big ****ing signing bonus check that comes out of his pocket today but doesn't hit the cap all at once. If all the Denver GM is empowered to do is go into the FA market and offer higher annual salaries and more guarantees that then go onto the new owners payroll, that's going to put him at a disadvantage. And frankly, that's the kind of thing that COULD devalue a franchise in sales talk. You don't want to be carrying big ol' long-term liabilities with your new purchase.

He's still only 33. Guys like Elway and Steve Young both set their career high for passing TD's when they were 37. Elway's best stretch of his career came when he was between 33-38 years old. Russ will adapt. What he loses physically he'll make up for mentally. |
