You fellas just have this wrong. Rodgers was a media darling for the majority of his career.

Dude was drafted the same year as Derrick Johnson - he's been around FOREVER. Aaron Rodgers: Douchebag is a relatively recent development for a guy that's been in the league for 20 years now.
No, Patrick Mahomes becoming Aaron Rodgers isn’t exactly on my list of greatest fears for him I’m afraid.

Nor did Rodgers. He was the "Breath of Fresh Air" after Favre finished his career all surly.

Again, it was a decade into his career, a career full of instances of the blame falling everywhere but HIS shoulders, that this monster was created.

I don't think it's LIKELY that it happens to Mahomes. But if it does, that'll be the reason why.

Yeah, count me firmly in the camp that has no idea where the Rodgers comparison is even coming from.

For one thing, Rodgers is just a ****ing weird dude. There have been plenty of athletes and celebrities that got too big for their britches and there ain't many that ended up like him.

Another thing is Rodgers had a pretty substantial amount of his career wasted by substandard coaching. Mike McCarthey is not Andy Reid. And when he DID get competent coaching with LaFleur and went back to back MVPs, he sperged the **** out and roundly rejected it, leaving for New York and tanking their franchise even further.

Right around the time the honeymoon period wore off from his SB title, he won another MVP and was really putting up shockingly good numbers.

So that 2014 season bought him a little more rope.

So maybe 2016 is when the worm started to turn a bit? Around the time he really gacked that Falcons game and GB underachieved a bit.

So lets say 2017. Guy was 34 years old by then. He'd been a starter for about 10 years. I mean that's a fair bit of runway still in front of Patrick. And when Rodgers was 27 with an MVP award and a SB title, nobody saw this stuff coming from him.

It just happened over time.

I don't think it's likely to happen here, but I don't think its impossible either.

Of course the coaching thing is legit - that would absolutely be a part of it. Maybe galaxy brain stuff from me in that I'm also considering the probability that around the time he's in his early/mid 30s, he's probably looking at a new coaching staff as well.

I think that was CLEARLY part of the spiral for Rodgers.

The thing with Rodgers is he went full batshit when he got an actual competent coaching staff.

And let's just be frank here, the coach after Reid is almost assuredly going to be Nagy.

Because, IMO, said coaching staff wanted to coach him. And he'd convinced himself after a decade plus of being told it, that he was beyond reproach.

I don't think Rodgers was always destined to be a ****ing nut. But man, how many famous folks with seemingly good heads on their shoulders had their cheese slip off their cracker when they got told how great they were for a decade.

I mean it's damn near all of 'em, isn't it? Athletes, actors, entertainers -- and I don't even fault them for it. It would be INSANELY difficult not to buy into that when its all you hear. It's just human nature.

That's not happening here? Isn't it pretty well known Reid goes out of his way to check Mahomes ego at times precise because of this?

Gonna be honest here. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Andy trying to continue coaching into his 70’s unless something health related forces him out. He’s just not the type of guy who can “retire” and relax at home.

I think maybe we're inching closer to some grudging consensus.

Yes, Reid does. And I think Mahomes his fine hearing it. Because that's Andy Reid. That's his coaching mentor. That's the guy that brought him into the league and 'raised him up' as an NFL player.

But is the next guy going to get that kind of acceptance from Patrick?

If you figure that there will be, what, 4 'phases' of Patricks career, we're probably at the beginning of the 2nd phase. And it's not phase 1 (obviously) or even 2 that worry me even a little bit.

It's phase 3 where the wheels could wobble. After he hasn't had Kelce around or after Reid's moved on.

Might absolutely be ghost hunting on my part - I'll accept that. As a friend of mine says "it's borrowing worry" -- that's not wrong.

But I really really REALLY like this dude and I really really REALLY dislike Rodgers. And I think 10 years ago you have Packers fans in the same spot we're in now. And I hate to think of being in the same spot THEY are now w/r/t Rodgers (because I know a couple and they loathe the guy). And I will always maintain that it was the insulation from criticism that really sent Rodgers down this path.

I just don't see these guys being close to the same. Rodgers was a dick from the git go IMO. He was pissed he slipped in the draft and he was pissed he had to sit behind Favre. He's always had a huge ego which is something Mahomes has always had in check. You're acting like a climate warrior worrying about something that may or may not happen 100 years from now.
