*****The Patrick Mahomes Thread*****

IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

I wonder if this is broken up by time? Maybe like hits from 0-2.5 seconds and hits taken after 2.5 seconds?

I know he’s a wizard and helps the offensive line out more than they help him, but he does also like to hang onto the ball until the very last second looking to make a play. I’m thinking that may be inflating the numbers a bit.

Agreed. A big part of his talent is moving around and extending plays waiting for someone to break open. He may take more hits because of that, but they're often not the violent hits that we typically think about with the "quarterback hits" term. It's a dude pushing him outside the tackle box after he releases it. I'm not worried that he's taking disproportionate hits.

I saw a mini-interview with Joe Burrow the other day where he said something interesting. Yeah, I'll admit it: Joe Burrow said something interesting. He was asked about the number of sacks he takes, and he pftted. He said, "Sacks are really overrated. I don't care if I take a sack on third down because I'm holding the ball longer on third down to try to make a play. If no one's open and I take a sack, who cares as long as it doesn't push us out of field goal range?"

I've always loved this stat because it's never not passed the eye test IMO.

He's getting into his groove and with 10 games to go and an undefeated season in the balance, the MVP is still there for the taking.
Sometimes the numbers don’t make sense though. Trevor Lawrence somehow got a 79 grade on Sunday. He fumbled deep in his own territory to give 7 points to Green Bay in a game the Jaguars lost by one possession. When you fumble the game away, your QBR should not be any higher than 60/100.

Joe Burrow somehow graded close to 90 in a game where he scored 17 points. Team needed him to put 30+ on the board and he wasn’t close to that. Kirk Cousins had an awesome game and somehow they grade him 75/100.

Yep, either that’s a core tenet Burrow lives by and talks about frequently or we happened to watch the same interview. I thought that was interesting and generally hard to disagree with. A 3rd down sack taken when trying to extend the play is typically going to be pretty inconsequential.

On a similar note, I remember a Mahomes interview from a while back where he was asked about his completion percentage and he said “I’m not a big completion percentage guy”. I can’t remember his reasoning but, IMO, as long as it isn’t oddly low, I don’t really find myself caring too much about it either. As long as you’re above, like, 62ish% you should be fine.

Makes me wonder what core philosophies some other great QBs live by.

Yeah, I've always felt like the PFF grades of our OTs are pretty low in part because of how Mahomes extends plays.

It's a good thing, don't get me wrong. But for instance I believe Taylor is outside of the top 50 starting OTs right now and that's just wrong. Even purely on his pass-blocking grades (which don't consider the penalties) he's outside of the top 35ish.

Naw - he's been a genuinely good pass protector all season. It's just the penalties (and occasionally run blocking) that's dinged him. But PFF says he's at best been average as a pass protector.

I just don't buy that. And this goes back several years; pretty much the entirety of Mahomes career. Our OTs are always about a tier below where my eye says they oughta be (and where several other stats such as pass rush win rate says they should be).

That's not interesting, it's stupid brah.

He could fumble, etc. He will take hits that way. I just don't see where he's coming from. But then again, he isn't, nor ever will be as good as pat

We are not going undefeated. It would take maximum effort every game. That's not what they have done since Hill was traded.

I'd rather not gamble on Reid and Mahomes choosing a different path than the one they are use to using and it produces SB wins. Especially with the early bye this year. Get the 3peat. That's enough legendary legacy.

Carson Wentz could probably win 3 or 4 of the remaining games.... the league is ass and attempting to go undefeated isn't going to change that.

I'd be very surprised if they went into the last couple weeks of the season undefeated with a 3+ game lead on the rest of the conference and didn't take the opportunity to rest guys though.... the Broncos game at the end of the season is the one huge difference between attempting to go undefeated and solely focusing on the playoffs.

What did you guys think when Mahomes grimaced after hopping to the sideline?

I was sure he had popped his achilles.

When he was holding his hands on his helmet, it sure looked like one of those long term really bad injuries. That said, let’s see how this plays out. I remember Tony Romo said ankle sprains are a lot worse a few days after the injury.

Still not an MVP year yet… but a handful more performances like that with an undefeated record late in the year and he’s back near the top of the list.

Looked like a mild reaggravation of the high ankle sprain after he got back on the field.
