With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Montgomery also has no real value right now. If he suddenly figures it out and fulfills the potential he had 2 years ago, wonderful, but don't hold your breath.

At this point, he's close to being a B- or C+ prospect that you'd throw in to seal a deal.

I find it hard to believe he'll be as woeful as Sanchez.

Pretty much. He has extremely limited trade value, and we have a bag of shit right now at the ML level. Can't really hurt anything at this point.

Montgomery is remarkably similar to the Rays' Chris Archer (who has struggled mightily at advanced levels but was dominant in High-A).

I bring this up because Archer was the centerpiece of the deal for Garza before last season.

Monty's stock is not as high as Archer's was then, but half of Garza's control is gone, too.

He's not a top 20 prospect any longer, but Montgomery still has decent trade value. He's still good enough to be a centerpiece type for a good No. 2/3 pitcher.

There is something about the game of baseball that makes it difficult for some fans to let go of setbacks. For years and years, Boston fans constantly refused to move past the Babe-Ruth trade to the hated Yankees, blaming 80+ titleless years on the unlikely “Curse of the Bambino” (I mean really, Babe Ruth became the biggest figure in the game—do you really think he spent two seconds caring about being traded from Beantown? Please. The Babe was too busy finding the next party to bother hurling a curse at the team dumb enough to trade him).

For many years, Cubs and Indians fans have suffered long title droughts, until they have learned to bear their pain with a certain dignity. Their long baseball angst has enriched the game’s culture with Chicago’s beloved “bleacher bums” while Cleveland inspired a gem of a baseball movie in “Major League”. Then there is St. Louis.

At least twice a year, Cardinals fans regurgitate another round of wailing over the championship that got away: namely the 1985 World Series against the cross-state Kansas City Royals. Never mind that Cardinals fans have been privileged to watch the greatest player of this generation (Albert Pujols) for a dozen years, or that they have been gifted with two titles in the last six years, or that their team has brought home more championships than any other besides the New York Yankees—none of those things matter. Still, they have to cry about 1985.

It’s like the neighborhood chum that grows up to marry a supermodel, who then comes home and is still bitter about the $50 he squandered on a promise ring for his eigth-grade crush who, with visionary prescience, turned him down. Grow up. Get over it. Everyone else has.

There is, however, a sort of elegant karmic equivalence in a certain group of Cardinals fans grasping onto the 1985 team as their avatar. The Cardinals really were the more talented team than the scrappy Royals, who were marginally capable at the championship level—but were incredibly mentally resilient. That talent, however, does not mean the Cardinals deserved the title. Instead the 1985 Cardinals lost for the most basic of all reasons—they blew it.

Rather than accept this reality, this greedy fanbase has pinned the blame on poor Don Denkinger for more than a generation. What’s even worse is they have taken a good team that should be celebrated and turned their legacy into something pathetic.

Baseball is one of the most mentally difficult games in the world. There is far too much time to think between plays before being asked to face 95-mph fastballs and hot-shot grounders. Even mentally strong teams can break—just as the Cardinals did in 1985—and commit a string of mistakes (dropped pop-up and a wild pitch that put the winning run in scoring position) that turn a narrow victory into a crushing defeat.

Such teams, however, do not deserve championships.

The real shame is in a fanbase that smears a gallant team’s memory by refusing to accept their defeat. Congratulations Cardinals fans, you’re the biggest whiners in baseball—at long last, you truly are the best at something.

You are 100 percent right. It's not even the worst trade the Giants have been involved in the past decade. Far from it.

Much worse trades that spring to mind:

Giants trade Francisco Liriano, Joe Nathan and Boof Bonser to the Twins for A.J. fucking Pierzynski.

I'm pretty sure the Orioles once traded Curt Schilling and Steve Finley for Glenn Davis.

Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe were traded by the Mariners to the Red Sox for Heathcliff Slocumb.

Boston traded Jeff Bagwell straight up for Larry Anderson.

Oakland traded McGwire to St. Louis for a flaming pile of crap.

The Tigers traded John Smoltz for two months of Doyle Alexander (who did help them make the playoffs, then helped them not advance)

The Mets trading Scott Kazmir to Tampa for a half-season rental of the amazingly mediocre Victor Zambrano?

Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez?

Any of the three major trades involving David Cone (Royals to Mets, Royals to Blue Jays, Blue Jays to Yankees - trading team got screwed each time)?

The Mets sending Nolan Ryan out for Angels' 3B Jim Fregosi?

The Reds traded Frank Robinson to Baltimore for Milt Pappaas because Robby was "washed up." He proceeded to be a star for 10 more seasons, helping Baltimore win 2 World Series and appear in 2 more.

The Indians moved young, in his prime slugger Rocky Colavito to Detroit for old, fat and almost done Harvey Kuenn.

Rotation changes appear likely for the Royals

Changes appear imminent in the Royals’ struggling rotation after a disastrous weekend sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium.

First up figures to be lefty Everett Teaford, who is likely to be recalled from Class AAA Omaha in time to start Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against Tampa Bay.

Veteran lefty Doug Davis is also under consideration along with two of the organization’s top prospects: right-hander Jake Odorizzi and lefty Mike Montgomery.

One club official cited the “need to do something” after the Royals saw Vin Mazzaro, Luis Mendoza and Jonathan Sánchez surrender a combined 17 runs in 11 1/3 innings in three losses to the Cardinals.

Manager Ned Yost previously identified Mendoza as a better fit as a long reliever, and Mazzaro was assigned Sunday to the bullpen to serve in a similar role. Yost said Sánchez, for now anyway, will remain in the rotation.

Recalling Teaford will require a corresponding space-clearing move on the 25-man roster. That move probably will be made Wednesday morning.

There is a concern in promoting Teaford and Davis in tandem because both are finesse lefties, and the Royals already have one of those in veteran Bruce Chen, who starts Tuesday against the Rays.

Club officials say Odorizzi and Montgomery remain back-burner options at present, but one or both are viewed as increasingly likely alternatives after the All-Star break.

Teaford, 28, is 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA in seven games at Omaha, including 2-0 while allowing just two runs in 16 innings over four appearances after returning to the Storm Chasers on June 7, initially on a rehab assignment and later on an optional assignment.

Davis, 36, was picked Monday as the Pacific Coast League pitcher of the week after yielding just one run in 12 innings while winning his last two starts at Omaha. He is 3-1 with a 3.08 ERA in seven games since signing a minor-league contract on May 12.

More significantly, perhaps, is Davis has walked just six batters in 26 1/3 innings. Command was often a problem in a 13-year career that saw him go 92-108 with a 4.44 ERA in 306 games for Texas, Toronto, Milwaukee, Arizona and the Chicago Cubs.

Teaford was 0-1 in three games earlier this season for the Royals while allowing seven runs and 11 hits in 11 innings. He went 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA last season in 26 games, including three starts.

Colón to Omaha

Right-handed reliever Roman Colón accepted an outright assignment to Class AAA Omaha by the Royals after clearing waivers. He had the option of refusing the assignment and becoming a free agent.

Colón, 32, permitted six runs and 12 hits in eight innings over three games after arriving June 14 from Omaha. He was designated for assignment on Saturday.

Starling nears debut

Outfielder Bubba Starling, the organization’s first-round pick in 2011, should make his pro debut Tuesday or Wednesday at short-season Burlington (N.C.), according to general manager Dayton Moore.

Starling is recovering from a minor hamstring injury.

A multi-sport standout from Gardner Edgerton High School, Starling turned down a scholarship to play quarterback at Nebraska by agreeing last August to a club-record signing bonus of $7.5 million.

That deal came too late for him to play last season in the minors, and he remained this year in extended spring training before being assigned to Burlington.

Minor awards

Right-hander Kyle Smith, 19, began his pro career last week by achieving a remarkable double honor: He was selected as the pitcher of the week in the short-season Pioneer League and the Class A Midwest League.

Smith made his pro debut last Tuesday by yielding one run and three hits over five innings in Idaho Falls’ 11-4 victory over Orem. He also struck out 11 while walking one.

Promoted to Kane County, Smith pitched six hitless innings on Sunday but settled for a no-decision in a 4-3 victory at Clinton. He struck out six and walked one.

Smith was the Royals’ fourth-round pick in 2011.

Minor details

Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon yielded just one run and four hits in six innings Monday while making his Class AA debut in Northwest Arkansas’ 3-2 victory over Arkansas.

Marimon, 23, was positioned for a victory before Ryan Dennick blew a save in the ninth. The Naturals walked off with a victory on Alex McClure’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

The Royals promoted Marimon after he went 4-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 14 games, including nine starts at Class A Wilmington. He was also the winning pitcher when the Carolina League All-Stars beat the California League All-Stars.

Rehab updates

Center fielder Lorenzo Cain returned to action by going one for three with a homer in Northwest Arkansas’ victory. He is four for 15 through four games of his rehab assignment for a torn left hip flexor.

Cain missed the last few games because of some leg stiffness.

Catcher Manny Piña joined Surprise in the Arizona Rookie League to begin his minor-league rehab assignment. He is recovering for torn cartilage in his right knee, which occurred Feb. 22 in spring training.

He is four for 15 through four games of his rehab assignment for a torn left hip flexor. Cain missed the last few games because of some leg stiffness. Catcher Manny Piña joined Surprise in the Arizona Rookie League to begin his minor-league rehab assignment. He is recovering for torn cartilage in his right knee, which occurred Feb. 22 in spring training.
