I did the math once on the gasoline tax revenue generated annually and the cost of the creation of the entire interstate system. It was fun.

$3 dollars for gasoline? Where do you live?

I've been paying in excess of $4 dollars (often, closer to the five) for at least the past 5 years. Only recently has it dipped below $3 dollars and it's awesome.

Your calculation leaves out inflation.

Yep, the Highway Trust Fund goes entirely to its specific purpose, infrastructure maintenance, and can't be spent on anything else. For many years now, the gas tax revenue that goes into the fund have been well short of the actual needed highway spending and that spending has had to come from other tax sources.

It's long past time to raise the gas tax and improve our roads.

The ENTIRE interstate system was built with $425 billion (2006 dollars).

Rather than trying to index to inflation I think they should set it at a percent of pump prices. Either way, having it set at a hard value (I think it is like 18 cents per gallon) is not effective.

$3/gal seems to generally the tipping point for bitching for most folks.

If my 5 year declining tax hike was implemented, it would raise $100 billion ADDITIONAL dollars for roads and bridges. That's a nice chunk of change for just infrastructure.

Maybe where you live. Where I live it's seen as awesome.

Try paying $4.59 a gallon for about five years.

If ~8% of what it took to build the ENTIRE interstate system is taken in tax revenue EVERY YEAR (and it is), I would argue that we don't have a tax revenue problem as it pertains to maintaining our roads and bridges.
