Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

Imagine if we finish tonight's draft by trading the last pick and Clyde for DeHop. I'd go ****ing wild.

Why on earth would we be out on DHop because we drafted a WR that some of us (humble brag) have been saying for over a month we'd draft in the 2nd round? Everyone with the slightest clue what our needs wear expected us to draft a WR. Certainly doesn't mean we're out on DHop.

We won't be top-10. Maybe top-13. But at that point it'll be just the Travis show and McKinnon if we get him back. And that's optimistic. It could be worse.

None of those others guys are going to command any respect from opposing defenses, except John Ross' sheer speed. The rest of them are pretty one-dimensional WRs. The only reason Toney and Skyy might be workable is that both are multiple in their talents/skillsets. Take the two of them off the field and we have a handful of limited WRs, each in their own way, but not very multiple.

And we've seen the results of putting a group of 3/4/5 level WRs on the field, with KC and other teams as well. It's not pretty.

I’m still intrigued for the same reason I was a few months ago. A short term contract guy who gives us time and patience to develop some young guys. And provides insurance in case no true WR1 emerges. A benefit you can’t get from a WR who wants a long term deal

Lol, it's possible. And I would be happy.

I'm not saying the worst-case scenario is going to happen, I'm saying that it's very possible that all these guys might struggle. Or rather, that several of them might struggle. It's mathematically possible, even likely.

But to say that we could have Toney miss a bunch of games and Skyy busts, and somehow we still have a top-5 offense with the Ross brothers (who probably won't play 17 games combined), Richie (undersized version of Skyy), Justin Watson (ST player more than WR) and Rice? That's not likely at all.

I'm just tempering my expectations.

Alright, now that we drafted a guy who might start to make a serious contribution in 2024, time to see what the latest ask is on Dhop.

I would argue that while definitely not preferable this offense can be productive with Watson as the no 3. He was actually useful as a no 4 or 5 WR option last year and effective as a deep threat. No, he's not scaring anyone, but outside of that two game stretch where he convinced himself he was MVS he was very dependable when he got open. He's able to do the bare minimum necessary that's asked of him.

Sky isn't going to be a bust - he's not just not a stud. He's a guy that struggled to learn the offense year 1 with a HC that doesn't like playing guys who don't know their full responsibilities. He'll be fine.

MVS is what he is. He's dangerous deep, drops passes, but also has big play upside. While much taller he's not that dissimilar from Hardman. Slower accelerating and not as top end fast while having a much larger catch radius and better vertical game. He'll get it done.

And that's the TDLR: nothing special, covers the bare minimum to function with limited upside, will do enough to allow the offense to succeed with Kelcee and PM carrying the offense. If we can get more out of Grey, Pacheco, and MEH we can function close to what last year's offense achieved.

And to offset a slight drop in offensive production this defense should take sizeable steps forward. Four starters will be in year 2 instead of learning on the job. They'll have a full year in the scheme as well as conditioning and defined roles.
