Honestly the Montana 49ers in the 1980’s probably should have won more than 4 rings. The Niners had a Top 2 or 3 scoring defense when teams like the Bears, Giants, & Redskins won the title in 1985, 1986, & 1987. Those teams had great defenses, but they did not have Montana or Jerry Rice on offense.

one of the fun things i've watched this year is the 1988 NFC Championship at Soldier Field

Montana went in there and diced them up, but the Bears were totally hapless on offense

this was after Joe got his dick knocked in the dirt there in the regular season

He played all of 1986 with a bad back, and I guess the Giants ended his season for good in the playoffs

I stumbled on that video awhile back. Pretty damn impressive stuff from Joe Cool. As usual in Chicago, it was really damn cold but he didn’t seem to care at all.

The 1990 Montana-led 49ers team should've won that year, which would've been the first three-peat in NFL history.

Montana and Rice said later in separate interviews that the grind of playing all those extra postseason games finally got to them and they lost their focus going into the 1990 season playoffs.

Yep, they had the #2 scoring defense in 1990. Man I wish Mahomes could have a defense like that.

Many of those clowns know less. It's ridiculous to take anything they say seriously.

That was before the salary cap. That defense was loaded with All-Pros and future HOFers.

Plus, the rules were different. Ronnie Lott couldn't be Ronnie Lott today. Ditto Charles Haley, etc.

I know the salary cap & free agency have massively changed the game. But Belichick managed to put together Top 3 defenses while drafting 30th or worse every year during the Patriots dynasty. Pretty remarkable what he was able to do in that regard with the salary cap & free agency limitations of the modern game.
