Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

Here's the thing: DHop has made a career out of making inaccurate QBs look like gods. It's literally his thing. So Lamar not being terribly accurate, particularly down the boundary, well DHop will catch anything catchable. Odell is another guy that can make catches out of uncatchable passes, obviously.

That's what I'm getting at.

Yeah, Lamar is not a great passing QB, not a very accurate QB outside the numbers, but those two guys will catch passes that are way off target-wise. Just put it up and give either of them some chance at coming down inbounds with the ball, and most of the time they'll do exactly that.

Give BAL that kind of ability, and now you actually have to cover the entire field from sideline to sideline. And worry about their run game/Lamar taking off.

That wasn't a part of their offensive ability before. Spags could literally go single up on the outside, because he knew that Lamar wasn't going to consistently drop dimes 25+ yards down the field on his receivers. Spags just defended the middle of the field.

If they add Deandre, and they already have Odell, they can now operate on the boundary because those guys will catch anything near them.

I'm not saying that they'll be SB contenders necessarily, because it's still Lamar, and he's not the best passer physically or mentally.

But BAL would definitely be more dangerous with those two running around. They'd be a much tougher out.

I'll ask you this because I've yet to see anyone come back with an answer to this question, but name a WR with multiple injuries in their late 20s to early 30s that came back and played at a high level. I can't find one. Getting injured at his age is a death wish to skill players.
He's got PEDs to get him back on track.

Gibbs wouldn’t need to be converted to WR. He’s a Jamaal Charles clone. He can do everything this offense asks of its RBs, and do it at an elite level.

At peak, Jamaal was a borderline HOF quality talent at RB.

In Andy’s first year in KC, Jamaal Charles had 1287 yards rushing with 12 TDs and another 693 yards receiving and another 7 touchdowns.

1980 yards and 19 touchdowns.

That’s the type of impact I can absolutely see Gibbs bringing…and there would be plenty left to keep Pacheco happy and with keeping both guys fresh.

Thank you Ravens! Good luck with Hopkins. It'll cost more than it's worth.

If that's the case, they should just draft Marvin Mims Jr. (or a similar WR) as he is already a receiver, and he could be there in the 2nd round.

Gibbs runs in the 4.3s, and Tyreek ran in the 4.2s, and was built like a brick. Not every fast RB can make the transition to NFL WR. Hell, some college WRs can't make the transition to NFL WR.

Not nearly as concerned as the people that seem to think Kadarious Toney won't get hurt...

Hopkins had 700 yards playing with JV level QBs in basically half a season, also guys tend to be more willing to go on good teams than put it on the line in a lost season.

There is no risk free option for the Chiefs at WR.

Relying on Toney to step up to replace JuJu as the Chiefs WR1? He's more injury-prone than Hopkins.

Relying on a rookie WR to replace JuJu? See the history of rookie WR's starting/making an immediate impact in Andy Reid's offenses... minimal.

But if they ate $7-$9 million or so, that would give us Dhop for basically the same money that we're paying MVS, which would be a ridiculous steal for KC. And we wouldn't even have to play MVS as a starter.

Put Toney, DHop in as your starters, then it doesn't even really matter if Skyy blows up or not. Just between Toney and DHop you're probably getting 2,400-2,600 yards and 15-18 TDs combined. Assuming that Toney would be able to play 15+ games in that scenario.

If Toney can't stay healthy, no problem, MVS comes in and plays his role, and Skyy is fine as long as he can basically double his yards (500) and get 4-6 TDs, and then any combination of one of the Ross boys (I have no faith that both will suit up every week) and Richie James and/or whichever rook WR we draft can produce the moderate amount of production we'd need if Toney has the gimps next season and/or Skyy doesn't develop as perfectly as we'd need/like.

Bottom line, we're not hoping that two or three WRs that don't have any real proven success to become actual starting caliber WRs with no safety net.
Arizona is not competing for a SB this year, so in some ways this is a wasted year for them. Eat Hopkins contract this year and get what you can in picks for him. It's better than holding on to him, still paying his salary, getting no picks for him to rebuild with and watching him leave after the 2024 season. If I am rebuilding I see no reason to keep him and I would want to do what I can to start that rebuild.
