Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

Smith IS retiring soon. Even if they only view Mahomes as a talented project, the Chiefs, had no real choice but to make sure they selected the QB they wanted in this draft. They will need him in 2018, as for WHATEVER the reasons you want to invent, there will be no worthy QB1 or QB2 on the roster had they not done so.
Oh they had other choices. They could have taken the same old "sign a 49er retread" approach by signing Colin Kaepernick and it still would have been an upgrade over Smith.

After all... in 2016, Smith threw for an abysmal 15 TD's and 8 INT's in 15 games. CK on the other hand threw for 16 TD's and 4 INT's in 12 games...and this was in shakier conditions with a weaker supporting cast!!!

But they chose Mahomes.

I know some on here don't care for Grunhard, but I think he is a solid reporter. He usually gets his facts straight from the front office or coaching staff.

The "official" politically correct version is Smith, Bray and then 2PM as a third stringer- that is right out of Andy's mouth....But how much coverage have we seen on Smith or Bray? Not much.

It makes sense they will install new plays to take advantage of 2PM's unique skills (when he is ready) and to hear from Grunhard that it might be as early as THIS year is pretty exciting!!

Smith set the bar pretty high last year with his 15 TD's and 8 INT.

I would hope 2PM could at least improve on these numbers and not regress.

All we ever hear is that Andy is an Offensive-minded coaching genious. His offense was designed to be explosive, but has been watered down with a combination of Smith's limitations, and Andy neutering the playbook to fit Smith's style and the talent surrounding him.

So what is going to happen when you exchange an often-hurt Maclin with Hill, have a healthy Kelce, and then add a solid runner in Hunt to the RB stable- Switch the methodical Smith for a Gunslinger in 2PM?

Smart money would bet 2PM will definately eclipse Smith's numbers last year. Should be a completely different brand of football. Not just the big bombs that 2PM can bring- but his whole infectious, positive attitude and passion to win games.

He's a Franchise QB, period.
It was impressive when Dustin Colquitt would pin teams inside the 20 on a consistent time after time when our offense lacked well offense. That gave our defense the knack to get the ball back with a short field and all those field goals and one TD per game by our Franchise Quarterback.

This team could win 10+ plus games and be 1-3 in the playoffs with Dane as QB....

Thats how loaded this team has been. Give it a NFL caliber QB and it could of been a super bowl contender over the last couple of years.

Well said. Certain people are GREATLY underestimating the effect upon the entire team when you have an offense that you KNOW is going to capitalize on those turnovers, and who is capable of going quarter for quarter with your defense and special teams in terms of intensity and production.

This is what the more deluded Smithites refuse to see or acknowledge. For them, there is literally no possibility whatsoever that Smith could be the major weak link that is holding this team back. There are too many variables!
Yet, sequester ANY person on this earth with little to no football knowledge, but who possess outstanding observation skills, and they will arrive at the truth of Smith's barnacle-like albatross presence upon this offense sooner rather than later.

But you know what? This is kind of a fun little game Dane has come up with, and I'm joining in the fun:

Everyone? EVERYONE!

Listen up!

I have decided from this day forward that I am now a professional, franchise porn star!
You may refer to me as "Johnny Thunderschlong".

Thanks!

Baby Lee and Dane need to "get clean."

If we could get those dope pushers Tiger and Sandy out of CP we'd be a lot better off.

So true, my astute friend. I fear however that the damage done to Lee and McCloud is permanent, with little to no chance of recovery.

I also suspect that Smith will provide even greater levels of FAIL for 2017. Father Time is coming, and he's about to wipe his peen across Smith's upper lip after dry-boning his aged rectum.

Alex Smith is a decent QB, top 15 in the league. The truth is it is just unlikely that we can make it all the way with someone that has his limitations. I thank him for helping bring back a culture of winning but it's time to evolve beyond just being happy to put together winning seasons. I was hopeful that he was evolving(at least slightly) based on how he brought us back against San Diego but once he got a concussion and started playing scared and not running(which was one of his better attributes), the coaches clearly saw the writing on the wall. He's a guy who doesn't throw deep often enough, and won't run. Defense against us becomes just covering the underneath routes with no worry of a QB running and a slight risk he might toss a deep one if the play was specifically designated for it to go deep.

He's the best QB we've had since Green and he brought us back to a decent team. It's time to move beyond that and we've got the weapons to be very good if the QB can utilize them. Smith just doesn't threaten defenses enough to make use of the weapons we have. We need to get to where we expect to get to the AFC Championship at a minimum. With this roster, that's what I expect. Who knows, maybe with a fire under his ass Smith will play harder. History doesn't show that to be the case so far but it's still his team this year. I'll be cheering for them to go all the way but I still fully expect we'll be seeing Mahomes leading the charge next year. Smith would have to fundamentally change who he is for that not to happen. I just don't think that's likely at this point in his career.

Alex Smith is not top 15. He's more in the 20-25 range now after being 15-20 range his first few years in KC.

His problems now are the same problems he has always had, he just isn't running any more to help cover up what an inadequate passer he is.

We don't owe him shit. If people want to praise him for helping the team be "respectable," they can, but I never will. KC could have gotten to respectable with a large number of less expensive prospects. Maybe there is a win or two less per season on average, but it wouldn't have affected the upside at all if a cheaper journeyman game manager had taken snaps the past four seasons instead of Alex Smith.
