Alternate Reality Game 1: Chiefs
The original post is below in blue, but let's summarize it here based on the past few years.
1. If you're a new player, start with the current Chiefs roster. If you've been playing for a while you'll have your own evolved roster. 2. You can add any free agent that the Chiefs add. 3. You lose any free agent that the Chiefs lose, but only if they were on the Chiefs' roster when you began playing. 4. You can accept or reject any trade the Chiefs make as long as any Chiefs player involved is currently on your roster. 5. You do not get players that the Chiefs draft. You draft your own players, using the same draft picks that the Chiefs have. 6. You can trade down ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade down before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.) If you trade down after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 25 percent. Any trade down must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up. (In other words, if you trade away one draft pick you cannot pick up more than three in return.) The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. See the examples at the bottom of the post. 6. You can trade up ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade up before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.). If you trade up after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 15 percent. Any trade up must involve only the picks of one NFL team. The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. 7. By the beginning of the season, you must reduce your total roster to include only 53 players. Original post: You can ignore this now.
Spoiler!
Added Rules and Reminders: 1. Remember that you can draft undrafted rookies, so you don't have to select only guys who were drafted. 2. Anyone can change their rookie draft selections at any time, UNTIL we reach ten days before training camp. At that point, all picks will be locked in. 3. Each team can do ONE trade of draft picks if they like, using this chart:http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...t-trade-chart/. However, if you're trading up, you have to pay 15 percent more than the stated value of the picks you're obtaining. If you're trading down, your pick's value will be discounted by 25 percent. For example, if you want to trade up from the 20th pick in the 1st to the 10th pick, you can see from the chart that the 20th pick is worth 259 points. The 10th pick is normally 369 points, but by paying 15 percent more, it will cost you 1.15*369, or 424 points. So you would need to come up with another 165 points to make the deal (424-259) For example, if you want to trade down from the 20th pick in the 1st and pick up the 10th pick in the 2nd, your 20th pick would normally be worth 259 points, but in this game it will be worth 25 percent less, or 194 points. The 10th pick in the 2nd is worth 142 points, so you can get 52 points back from the other team. (Remember that you cannot pick up more than two extra picks in the trade, so consider your math carefully.) You can do only ONE draft-pick trade up and ONE draft-pick trade down, and in each case you can only trade with one other team for their own picks. (In other words, you couldn't take the 52 points in the above example from a third team.) Last edited by Rain Man; 04-25-2024 at 11:30 AM.. |

Okay, here's our draft
Round 1 - WR Kendall Wright (Titans -20th pick) Wanted to go DE with Coples, Ingram, or Mercilus, but the last two will be OLBs and Wright was too good a value. While we're building depth at WR with Breaston, Leonard Hankerson, and Greg Salas, Wright could come in and start. Also considered DT Michael Brockers. Round 2 - Zach Brown (Titans - 52nd pick) I guess we liked the Titans' draft. We're desperate at OLB, and Brown was a good value who kept us from drafting Ingram or Mercilus earlier. Lots of good potential picks as we considered DTs Devon Still and Jerel Worthy, OLB Lavonte David, and DE Vinny Curry. Round 3 - QB Russell Wilson (Seahawks - 75th pick) Easy choice here as we continue our strategy of drafting an early QB every year until we find one. (Sanchez and Clausen haven't yet proven themselves for us.) If Wilson wasn't available we would've gone with (in order): DT Mike Martin, WR Mohammad Sanu, OLB Nigel Bradham, WR Chris Givens, or DE Jake Bequette. Taking a WR here would've probably pushed our 1st round pick to Coples. Round 4 - OLB Ronnell Lewis (Lions - 125th pick) Too much value here, and our OLBs are really weak. More competition to go with Zach Brown. Also considered DE Jared Crick very strongly, and pondered ILB James-Michael Johnson and RB Chris Rainey even though we don't need help at those positions. Round 5 - DE Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons - 164th pick) Definitely need help at DE and he looked like good value. Also considered RBs Chris Rainey and Cyrus Gray, and FS Markelle Martin. Round 6 - SS Charles Mitchell (Falcons - 192nd pick) Strongly considered FS Markelle Martin, but we need a SS and Mitchell looks promising. Also considered CB Alphonso Dennard. Round 7 - CB Alphonso Dennard (Patriots - 224th pick) We need depth at CB and he seemed like a steal. Apparently fell due to some minor legal problems. Debated between him and DE Cam Johnson, as well as WR Junior Hemingway. Round 7 (obtained by accepting the trade of Jarrad Page, who was still on our roster, for this pick) - WR Junior Hemingway (Chiefs - 238th pick) Maybe some WR depth and a deep threat. Wanted Cam Johnson, but he went one pick before this. Also debated on FS Antonio Allen and undrafted free agent Ryan Steed.

My initial training camp depth chart is as follows:
QB Mark Sanchez (Jets) Russell Wilson (Seahawks) Jimmy Clausen (Panthers) Tyler Palko Brodie Croyle I need someone to step up here. HB Jamaal Charles C.J. Spiller. (Bills) Shaun Draughn Nate Eachus Jackie Battle Thomas Jones I like this situation with two speed merchants on top of the chart. FB Peyton Hillis Tim Castille Taylor Gentry Hillis will be fine. WR Dwayne Bowe Kendall Wright (Titans) Steve Breaston - WR Greg Salas (Rams) Leonard Hankerson (Redskins) Jeremy Horne Junior Hemingway (Chiefs) Derrick Williams (Lions) Brandon Kinnie - WR Zeke Markshausen - WR Jamar Newsome - WR Josh Bellamy - WR Chris Chambers Kevin Curtis Building some good depth here. I like how this unit is coming together. TE Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) Kevin Boss - TE Leonard Pope Steve Maneri - TE Tim Biere - TE Set here with Tony and great depth. OT Branden Albert Eric Winston - RT Bruce Campbell (Raiders) Alex Boone (49ers) Lee Ziemba (Panthers) David Mims - OT Ryan O'Callaghan Our free agent tackle helped a lot. We have lots of young depth. G Brian Waters Lilja, Ryan Jason Pinkston (Browns) Wade Smith Duke Robinson (Panthers) Justin Cheadle - OL Cam Holland - OL Looking good here with three legitimate starters plus versatile Wade Smith. C Rodney Hudson (Chiefs) Wiegmann, Casey Rob Bruggeman Looking good here as long as Hudson remains healthy. Wiegman may be retiring, which would be a loss. K Alex Henery (Eagles) Matt Szymanski - K Great shape here. P Dustin Colquitt Great shape here. FS Kendrick Lewis Kyle McCarthy Really needed to upgrade here, but couldn't find a place to do it in the draft. SS Reshad Jones (Dolphins) Charles Mitchell (Falcons) Shiloh Keo (Texans) I need Mitchell to step up, or maybe Jones. CB Brandon Flowers Stanford Routt - CB D.J. Moore (Bears) Travis Daniels Jacques Reeves - DB Alphonso Dennard (Jets) Mikail Baker - DB Tysyn Hartman - DB Jean Fanor - DB Terrance Parks - DB Chandler Fenner - DB Neiko Thorpe - DB Pretty deep. No big-name all-stars, but good unit. OLB Rey Maualuga (Bengals) Zach Brown (Titans) Ronnell Lewis (Lions) Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers) Andy Studebaker Chris Carter (Steelers) Bruce Miller (49ers) Caleb Campbell - LB Dexter Heyman - LB Charlie Anderson Eric Bakhtiari Justin Cole Major talent infusion here since we weren't very good last year in this area. I think we have the potential for a great unit if the rookies work out. ILB Derrick Johnson Brandon Siler - ILB Demorrio Williams No changes here, and none needed. DE Tamba Hali Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers) - Injured Alex Carrington (Bills) Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons) Luke Patterson - DL Ethan Johnson - DE Wallace Gilberry Losing Bowers hurts. Hali is fine on the left and we can put Carrington on the right. Let's hope the rookie steps it up. DT Glenn Dorsey Amon Gordon Smith, Shaun Myron Pryor (Patriots) Anthony Toribio Lawrence Guy (Packers) Ron Edwards Didn't upgrade the talent here. We're deep, but not great. Dorsey is a big help.

I know I am late on this, so sorry. I promise what has happened so far has not colored or changed one pic. Tonight all I did was figure out a few late rounders, and did not investigate them beyond the highlights that were available on the NFL's 2012 draft site. I have watched zero pre-season games (not even the Chiefs), and been only a bit aware of what's gone on at all due mainly to a health crisis with my dad. The one thing I do know thanks to this site is that DeCastro has disappointed so far, but he was the first rounder I had been planning on so making myself stick with it.
So here goes: My Draft: 1. G David DeCastro (Steelers) 2. QB Brock Osweiler (Broncos) 3. OT Donald Stephenson 4. NT Alameda Ta'amu (Steelers) 5. S George Iloka (Bengals) 6. WR B.J. Cunningham (Dolphins) 7a. WR Rishard Matthews (Dolphins) 7b. ILB Vontaze Burflict (Bengals) My Camp Roster: QB Mark Sanchez (Jets) Brady Quinn Ricky Stanzi Brock Osweiler (Broncos) HB Jamaal Charles Peyton Hillis FB Tim Castille Shane Bannon WR Dwayne Bowe Steve Breaston Jonathan Baldwin Dezmon Briscoe (Buccaneers) B.J. Cunningham (Dolphins) Rishard Matthews (Dolphins) TE Chase Coffman (Bucs) Jake O'Connell Kevin Boss OT Branden Albert Eric Winston Selvish Capers (Giants) Donald Stephenson G Lilja, Ryan Jon Asamoah David DeCastro (Steelers) C Matt Tennant (Saints) Rodney Hudson K Ryan Succop P Dustin Colquitt S Eric Berry Geroge Iloka (Bengals) CB Brandon Flowers Perrish Cox (49ers) Stanford Routt Jalil Brown OLB Tamba Hali Justin Houston Clint Sintim (Giants) Sergio Kindle (Ravens) Ricky Sapp (Jets) ILB Derrick Johnson Jovan Belcher Vontaze Burflict (Bengals) DE Glenn Dorsey Allen Bailey Amon Gordon Wallace Gilberry NT Terrence Cody (Ravens) Cam Thomas (Chargers) Jerrell Powe Alameda Ta'amu (Steelers) Last edited by wazu; 08-13-2012 at 10:28 PM.. |

Awesome. It'll be interesting to see if the two Decastro teams win out, or if my Kendall Wright pick trumps him.

Okay, time to cut to your final 53.
Note: You can add any of the following players to your roster if they're not already on there. (These are free agent/undrafted pickups on the Chiefs roster.) RB -- Shaun Draughn (1st year, North Carolina), Nate Eachus (rookie, Colgate). TE -- Kevin Boss (6th year, Western Oregon) DL -- Ropati Pitoitua (4th year, Washington State). LB -- Edgar Jones (6th year, Southeast Missouri) DB -- Abram Elam (7th year, Kent State), Tysyn Hartman (rookie, Kansas State).

My final roster is as follows.
My big news is that I'm going to give up and switch to a 3-4. I'm having all sorts of problems in my front seven on defense, and I think they'll fare better as a 3-4 unit. My offense is coming together very well, but my defense is struggling. QB Russell Wilson (Seahawks) Mark Sanchez (Jets) Jimmy Clausen (Panthers) I may have a starting quarterback. (Two of them, actually.) HB Jamaal Charles C.J. Spiller. (Bills) Shaun Draughn Nate Eachus I like this situation with two speed merchants on top of the chart. Spiller should be increasing his carries in Buffalo. FB Peyton Hillis Hillis was a nice pickup. WR Dwayne Bowe Kendall Wright (Titans) Steve Breaston - WR Leonard Hankerson (Redskins) Greg Salas (Rams) Wide receiver is really coming together for me. Wright, Breaston, and Hankerson can man my #2 spot. Wright is a rookie 1st rounder who will start in Britt's absence in Tennessee, and Hankerson is a 2nd string guy expected to get lots of action in Washington. Salas is a third-stringer in St. Louis. TE Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) Kevin Boss - TE Steve Maneri - TE Set here with Tony and great depth. OT Branden Albert Eric Winston - RT Bruce Campbell (Raiders) Our free agent tackle helped a lot. We have young depth, too. I'm happy. Bruce Campbell was traded to Carolina and is a backup tackle there. G Brian Waters Jason Pinkston (Browns) Alex Boone (49ers) Lilja, Ryan Wade Smith We're going deep on the roster here because we have five NFL starters with Alex Boone blossoming in San Francisco. Pinkston and Boone are both starting. C Rodney Hudson (Chiefs) Not much depth. Hopefully Hudson does well. K Alex Henery (Eagles) Great shape here. Henery is a good kicker. P Dustin Colquitt Great shape here. FS Kendrick Lewis Travis Daniels Charles Mitchell (Falcons) Deep, but not scary, and Lewis is hurt. Mitchell is a rookie 2nd stringer with Atlanta. SS Reshad Jones (Dolphins) Abram Elam Tysyn Hartman - DB Jones is a starter for Miami, so I'm okay here and have depth. CB Brandon Flowers Stanford Routt - CB D.J. Moore (Bears) Alphonso Dennard (Patriots) This unit went from being deep to being very thin. Moore is a nickel back in Chicago, and Dennard is a rookie who made the Patriots but is deep in the depth chart. OLB Tamba Hali Chris Carter (Steelers) Zach Brown (Titans) Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers) Andy Studebaker I'm moving Hali back to his great OLB spot in the 3-4. On the other side, I'll put Chris Carter, I guess, who's backing up James Harrison in Pittsburgh. The other non-Chiefs are NFL second-stringers, Brown as a rookie and Watson in his third year. I have depth, but I need someone to step up beside Hali. ILB Derrick Johnson Rey Maualuga (Bengals) Brandon Siler - ILB Going back to a 3-4 lets me move Maualuga back to his natural position, and I'm strong here even if I lack depth. DE Glenn Dorsey Ropati Pitoitua Ronnell Lewis (Lions) Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons) Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers) Another big problem area. Lewis and Massaquoi are both rookies, and Lewis is a second-stringer. Massaquoi is buried on the chart, though he's gotten some good reviews. Neither is big enough to be a 3-4 end, which may mean they're screwed in the long run. I invested a high pick in Bowers in my 4-3 defense and he's out for the year, most likely, with an offseason injury. I'm not sure how he'll fit even if he comes back. So Glenn and Ropati will be my guys. NT Ron Edwards Anthony Toribio Alex Carrington (Bills) Well, Ron Edwards is starting in Carolina, so he and Toribio will split snapes at NT. Carrington was moved by Buffalo from DE to OLB and now to DT. Not sure what's going on there, but he's not a NT, so I'm not sure what to do with him in the long run. Tough Cuts: Junior Hemingway (Chiefs) Leonard Pope Neiko Thorpe - DB Edgar Jones Demorrio Williams Smith, Shaun Myron Pryor (Patriots) Easy Cuts: Tyler Palko Brodie Croyle Jackie Battle Thomas Jones Tim Castille Taylor Gentry Derrick Williams (Lions) Brandon Kinnie - WR Zeke Markshausen - WR Jamar Newsome - WR Josh Bellamy - WR Chris Chambers Kevin Curtis Jeremy Horne Tim Biere - TE Lee Ziemba (Panthers) David Mims - OT Ryan O'Callaghan Duke Robinson (Panthers) Justin Cheadle - OL Cam Holland - OL Wiegmann, Casey Rob Bruggeman Matt Szymanski - K Kyle McCarthy Shiloh Keo (Texans) Jacques Reeves - DB Mikail Baker - DB Jean Fanor - DB Terrance Parks - DB Chandler Fenner - DB Bruce Miller (49ers) Caleb Campbell - LB Dexter Heyman - LB Charlie Anderson Eric Bakhtiari Justin Cole Luke Patterson - DL Ethan Johnson - DE Wallace Gilberry Amon Gordon Lawrence Guy (Packers)

Here is my 53 man roster:
QBI'm hurting here. I'm obviously hoping for a career year from someone. RBI'm comfortable with this backfield, but not ecstatic. Bernard Pierce is hobbled at the moment and it remains to be seen whether he is Ray Rice's heir apparent in Baltimore. For now though, the Charles/Hillis combo is pretty promising. WRI'm pretty thin here with David Reed currently on Baltimore's PUP list. TE Kevin BossI'm crossing my fingers for the health of Kevin Boss and I hope that one of my other two guys can block. OTI was pretty happy with my starting lineup until DeCastro disappeared for the season. Fortunately, I had more depth at Guard than at any other OL position so Ryan Lilja or Kraig Urbik can step in. My depth beyond that is pretty questionable though. KAdequate to good kickers, IMO. FSI have decent front line quality but I'm super thin here. I'm kicking myself for missing out on Abram Elam when the Chiefs picked him up. It looks like I'll be filling in with a lot of stiffs off the street this season. OLBI've got some decent linebackers, but depending on injuries or suspensions I may need to move Derrick Johnson back to OLB at some point. DEI still need someone to step up at NT. Hopefully Toribio or Powe can do the job this year. Ta'amu looks like he needs a year or two to develop.

I think you can pick up Elam, because he came to the Chiefs this season, right? The rule is that anyone who signs with the Chiefs as a free agent is on your training camp roster.
