Payton was going to take Mahomes.

When you have a HOF QB still playing at a high level (that was 4 years ago) it changes the dynamics.

Wasn't it well know that NO wanted Mahomes and that's why we traded up to beat them to him?

NO and Arizona were the teams we were trying to get ahead of.

Yes they did like him as much as most teams but they clearly didn’t think he would be as good as he is now.

You don’t sit on your hands if you think the best QB you’ve ever seen is there. You trade up and go get him.

Not really, they could have sat him for a year, then flipped Drew for a couple of picks and likely been playing for their second or third SB in a row. And don't say that they wouldn't have traded Drew. It's a business and sometimes you have to make decisions that are unpopular with the fans

Exactly. Chicago (stupidly I might add) traded up from #3 to #2 to draft Trubisky as they were afraid of losing him. If Mahomes was as good to Payton as he is letting on then the Saints would have done everything in their power to ensure they got him. I think I remember hearing that they were also high on Lattimore and weren't to upset with getting him over Mahomes.

If KC didn't come up to 10 I believe NO takes Mahomes and sits him for a year and trades Brees as KC traded Smith.

But Brees > Smith by a lot so NO wasn't aggressive enough, in the end.

The speculation during the draft was that the New Orleans Saints targeted the big-armed Texas Tech product at No. 11 to be their heir to Drew Brees.

That speculation was confirmed from an odd source on Friday.

Golfer Ryan Palmer was in the Saints' war room on Thursday night, along with fellow golfer Jordan Spieth. Palmer told reporters on Friday the Saints were "really big into Mahomes."

This is the giveaway. Would anyone really compare Mahomes to Lattimore? He throws that out there like it justifies not moving up to get Mahomes, but there is no way in hell that anyone would give any thought to drafting Lattimore instead of Mahomes if we replayed the 2017 draft. You would be considered insane.

A friend of mine is a big Drew Brees/Purdue fan. I took him along a couple years ago when I met Mahomes. My friend asked him, "So I heard the Saints were looking to draft you. Do you think it would've been hard sitting behind Brees for a few years?"

Mahomes looked at him like, "Kid, what are you smoking?" He replied, "Uhm, I would've played."

Patrick looks like a stone cold killer in that pic. He's ready to commit a 1st degree murder against the Bucs.
