The Curse of Oak Island

Has anyone else started watching this show? I am a sucker for this kind of thing and so far it has been very interesting. You can watch the first two episodes in the link below. Since this was filmed over the summer, if any of you have figured out what happens please use spoilers for anything that hasn't aired yet.

http://www.history.com/shows/the-curse-of-oak-island

For those who aren't familiar, very briefly, it is about an island on the eastern shore of Canada that is rumored to have buried treasure from possibly the Knights Templar dating back to the 1300s. In 1795 an apparent secret hiding space was discovered in which levels of wooden planks were buried every 10 feet. Digging down around a hundred feet, they found some gold link chain and a few other things. Eventually they dug to a point that causes the hold to be flooded by sea water as if it was some sort of boobie trap, which is believed to come from some type of tube that is out in the ocean.

Another person in the 1970s dug alongside the original hole but also got his hole flooded by sea water. These guys now who are on the show purchased most of the island and are trying to solve the mystery with help from the guys who dug their own hole in the 1970s. The hole curse aspect is just kind of meh and I don't really pay attention to it, but I am sure the producers just like the added element it presents. The mystery and adventure is really interesting. It is nice to see a show like this that is actually producing some results so far.

That just isn't true. Sure they haven't found much, but some peculiar things are present and have been found.

My main criticism all along has been how they feel obligated to drag it out over many episodes so there is inevitably a lot of filler. At the beginning of this season they were hyping that they have found something they couldn't wait to show us. Who knows what that is or if it is actually astounding or not, but I would prefer to see more progress with each episode, but of course that will never happen.

Even if they find something, it was planted. BigChiefTablet says so.

It isn't outlandish to think Templars where in the area so you can see why people would try to attribute this to them. Whether they buried things on that particular island, or did anything of the such anywhere is obviously a whole different matter though.

Oh i don't doubt that Templars could've been there. But the whole, "Oh hey look at this rock. It looks like maybe a Templar cross?". That kinda is stuff is a bit of a stretch.

That angle makes little sense to me. Why in the world would they plant their own evidence and then spend hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions to dig the site up based on their own planted evidence?

I don't know what these guys are being paid to do this show (if anything at all) but i doubt that it would equate to the cost of these special projects.

When we did a single episode show on Speed Channel, we got paid $30K. That basically just covered wages for what amounted to essentially a "free" build for T.V.

Drinking something 100 proof every time the narrator starts off with "Is it possible that..." makes the show a lot more believable as well.

Still funny to me how the Templars have become such a goofy conspiracy source. Their actual history is quite different than the silly Dan Brown interpretation.

That narrator really has carved out a nice niche for himself between this show and the others he does for the History channel.

Maybe it's the narrator that keeps bringing me back...

I just looked up the narrator. Holy shit he's done a lot of stuff. From Star Wars to Big Bang Theory to GTA V voicing.

Name some of these peculiar things that have been found. Particularly any that are still around and not just mentioned in some letter or newspaper article from the 1800's.

Look, I heard about this island a long ass time ago, and it seemed really interesting at first. Everyone wants to believe a true life treasure hunt story. There have been countless 90 minute specials about people willing to dump money down that hole.

Now they figured out how to help subsidize their lunacy. Get someone to film it and make a reality TV show. It has all the credibility of the bigfoot show and those guys who chase ghosts. And yes, they make shit up. Nothing real about reality TV. I'm sure the lunatics out there digging believe that they will find something. That won't make it so. And in the meantime, they need to keep the ratings up so, let's just drop a coin I have in my collection over here.
