NfL owners meeting this week. 18 game schedule

NFL owners meeting this week to discuss potential for 18-game regular season

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's campaign to add an 18th game to the regular-season schedule is reportedly set to gain momentum during next week's annual owners meetings.

According to Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson, two NFL executives believe schedule expansion talks "will intensify" when the annual meeting talks place in Palm Beach, Florida from March 30 to April 2.

Those talks will be part of what is expected to be "more assertive efforts" from Goodell and team owners to talk schedule expansion this summer, according to Robinson.

The NFL has an option to opt out of many of its current broadcast deals after the 2029 season. The league could theoretically hope to get more money on a new deal if it can promise networks 18-game seasons after the current collective bargaining agreement expires in March 2031.

Tush Push rule tabled. Cowards.

I'm on the side of keeping the tush push but allowing the defense to also push players. At least make it fair.

One of the reasons it's so successful is by rule the offense is given an upper hand. It's wild you can run up and push the QB or RB but like, a DB can't do that to a DL.

I thought the whole point of Thursday night games was to put shitty teams in prime time. Are they flexing just so they can find even shittier teams?

So I assume the cap will go up as a result as well right? Did it go up when we went to 17 games a couple years ago?

If they keep adding games, it's going to become like baseball where fans plan to miss a few games and just look at the box score later. That's really bad for football.

Yeah, the cap has been going up fast. In fact, if I was part of the player's union I'd demand a change to the salary cap calculations. If the owners want to increase the workload for the players, then the players are entitled to more money for that increased workload and the inherently increased risk.

Currently, they calculate the salary cap each year as 48% of the certain league revenues divided by 32, but since that league revenue figure is calculated using the prior year's revenue, the players appear to be getting only about 44% of the revenue in a given year.

The current cap for 2025 is approximately $279 million. That implies that the revenue figure used was $581 million. However, that revenue figure was for 2024 while the salary cap is for 2025. If we look at the salary cap for 2024 which was $255 million, then we see that the players were only paid 43.8% of the revenue that was generated in 2024.

The salary cap is going up by huge amounts every year now, so the larger the revenues get, and therefore the salary cap too, the smaller the percentage gets for the players vs. the actual revenues of that particular year.

Therefore, if I was a player, I would want that percentage to be raised to something like 51-52% to make up for the lag between revenue generation and salary cap reward. This would be particularly important when the NFL is trying to increase the workload on the players to generate more revenue.

The regular season OT rules will now be the same as the postseason… both teams get a possession.

That aint happening. Thats 31.25 million per year to each team.

Amazon Prime Video pays the NFL approximately $1 billion per year for the exclusive rights to broadcast Thursday Night Football (TNF) games, starting with the 2023 season and running through 2033.

Give every team two BYE weeks.

The 18 game schedule shouldn't happen unless both of the above happen.

I can see the league giving two BYE weeks, but unfortunately TNF is here to stay.
I would say there is a better chance of them adding Wednesday night Football than getting rid of TNF.

Or create two time slots for MNF and/or TNF.

Why the sudden increase from 16 to 18?

We've only been playing a 17 game season since 2021 or 2022.
