Do you have allergies?

Due to certain life circumstances, I’ve been learning a lot about allergies lately.

Growing up I suppose I was fortunate enough that no one in my family ever had any allergic reactions (except hay fever), but in conversations I’ve had recently, it seems a lotttttt of people out there are allergic to a lottttt of different things.

So what about you?

Just FYI but I had a sleeve gastrectomy 6 years ago and have been on a surgically-supervised regimen since. Our counselors want us to consume so many supplemental grams of protein per day and they insist it should be whey protein isolate.

Whey protein isolate is by far the best source of supplementation. It's about 20% more absorbable than whey concentrate and blows away any other milk or plant-based protein.

You should always be using whey protein isolate if you're taking protein supplements.

You're allergic to Miralax? It's supposed to be inert.

I broke out in hives and body turned red and blood pressure shot up when I took a little less than the dose it said to take. That was before I had a colonoscopy last year.

Yeah that's interesting. It's not supposed to produce any chemical reaction because the compound is supposed to be inert.

ya the doctor said it's uncommon to have a reaction to that, he thought it could have been possible cross contamination.

Never had allergies as a kid or my whole life until I hit my forties. Now I get the watery eyes, hacking cough, and runny nose from something in the air. Never dug into it to find out exactly what. I control it with over the counter stuff.

I'm allergic to Blue Cheese and Arugula I've found also. Seems random to me.

A weird one I have that’s not common but still is established is being allergic to bananas, cantaloupes and some other citrus type melons/fruits. For bananas it definitely wasn’t the case as a kid, but if I eat one now I get swelling in the throat, difficulty swallowing and various uncomfortable reactions. Apparently they have some similar or same proteins as ragweed.
Yeah, that’s an interesting one. Sounds like you may have Oral Allergy Syndrome or Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome. Basically the pollen you’re allergic to cross contaminates specific fruits, which can cause a reaction. Melons, bananas, zucchini, kiwi, mangoes and a few others.

I recently learned about this from someone who apparently had a birch tree pollen allergy so they couldn’t eat apples, pears, and a bunch of other stuff.

That’s a tough one. My daughter has a dairy allergy, which is a major part of the reason I’m learning so much about allergies in the first place. She’s good with whey and casein but the testing showed she can’t tolerate lactoglobulin. Either way, we have to avoid it. And I never realized how much of my diet was dairy until this happened.

Poor girl may never have ice cream.. or pizza.. I hate that..

See, that’s what really gets me. Lettuce?!? Apparently it’s the proteins that your body reacts to. What the heck proteins does a lettuce leaf have? Plus the fact that your body was totally cool with it for 40+ years then one day decided to nuke itself anytime it came in contact with it.

If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of reaction do you get from lettuce?

It makes it very tough not eating dairy. Every family dinner they have to make stuff specifically for me and I miss out on all the good stuff. I do miss cheese and ice cream.
