Doubt they change it, but I'll bet the NFL re-thinks allowing tush push

All this consternation and bullshit from blowhards everywhere about the 4th and inches play has me thinking about the future of this play. And man, if we're already getting Schefter and Florio talking about changing the rules to help teams beat the Chiefs, we may as well make it fair across the board, right?

The tush push hides the ballcarrier and makes it tough to view and make a decision on ball placement when it's close. I do believe the NFL wants to get the calls right, but when they make the decision in the game and rule it too close to call so they can't overturn it, people scream bloody murder. I think by creating a damn rugby pile when every inch really matters, you're just going to continue inviting this crap to fester in discussions of very important games. Shit, we're up against the emperors of this stupid play. What if one of them is close like this again? The Eagles REALLY hide Hurts on these plays, and he goes pretty low. They're going to convert the play a whole bunch, but a few of them might be close. What then will happen?

And in addition to it just being a stupid ****ing play with no chance of unpredictability, I just hate it. And for people who say, "Just learn to stop the play and offenses won't run it" you're allowing offensive players to push each other, but you're saying defenders can't meet force with force. Nobody can stop that shit if you're giving an unfair advantage to one side of the ball.

Nonsense. We don't do it so they won't look to ban it. If we wanted to get it banned we would start doing it.

Said this in another thread but they should make the rule that it must be inconclusive that they made the line to go, otherwise it’s called short.

I.e. the pile has to clearly go over the line, or a dive with the ball visible etc.

I’d be fine with just getting rid of forward progress on that play entirely. Even things up a bit.

Play isn’t over until the ball carrier hits the ground. Get the first down, but the defense keeps working until you lose 3 yards? Loss of 3. No first down.

We have enough rules that benefit the offense. If this play is allowed, then it needs to have some downside too.

That’s one way to address it.

Personally I hate the play so good riddance if so.

From both player safety and seeing the ball and knowing when to blow the play dead..., it all seems not great. I would be fine with getting rid of it.

But QB sneak would still be a thing. Seems like it is going to be hard to write and actually enforce rules.

That stuff on the 4th down was the play of the game. Whoever the main catalyst was for that stop is a beast.

I really wish Washington kept trying to jump the snap to the point the refs “awarded” a touchdown; that would have definitely led to a ban

If Philly uses it to end this Chiefs’ run, though, they’re not gonna do it any time soon

Defense isn't allowed to stack and push back to counter it because of player safety. It should be eliminated for the offense to be able to do it too.

I just think it's an aesthetically ugly play, not entertaining at all, personally not in the spirit of the game imo. Makes it hard for the refs too.

I say get rid of it

We haven't even seen a regular QB sneak since Mahomes got hurt a few years ago. I wouldn't hold my breath.

That's just the thing. The tush push is a telegraphed play. There's no surprise, everybody knows you're going to do it.

Therefore, there's no real reason it HAS to be the QB that runs it. Put someone in there that has good lower body strength, out some big guys behind him, and run it.

The Chiefs could run it with a TE if they wanted to.
