LNBS: How do you get the Best OTs?

We are all hoping that we get to see DJ Humphreys inject some juice to this OL. I think he will do exactly that and he will earn a new deal. Let’s get that out of the way.

This thread is to provide sone up to date data to discuss where the best OTs in the game were drafted. Some interesting stuff, for sure. I kinda thought I would go into this and see only high first rounders in the top 25…but that’s just not the case.

The way I posted them is for simple relevancy…
Overall NFL rank for all OTs on PFF (dodges wrenches) ….after their last name is the slot they were drafted. This is -generally speaking- the top half of the leagues OTs.

1) Mailata 233
2) Armstead 75
3) Sewell 7
4) Slater 13
5) Silverback 4
6) O’Neill 62
7) Tom 140
8) Johnson 4
9) Wirfs 13
10) Raimann 77
11) Cross 9
12) Darrisaw 23
13) Bolles 20
14) Johnson 6
15) Alt 5
16) Miller 15
17) Lucas undrafted
18) wright 10
19) Jones 168
20) Thomas 4
21 Tunsil 4
22) Decker 16
23) Jackson undrafted
24) Smith 9
25) Ekwonu 6
26) Moton 64
27) Matthews 6
28) Howard 23
29) Dawkins 63
30) McGlintchey 9
31) Moore 129
32) McKivitz 153

Some interesting things to note.

5 of the top 10 OTs were drafted at pick 62 or later.
15 of the top 32 were chosen at pick 20, or later.
12 were AFTER the first 60 picks.
7 of the top 20 were drafted at 62 or later.
Only 13 were top 10 picks.

Veach has done a good job of bringing in options with what he has to work with. I’m hoping Humphries works out, if so, this conversation’s probably over for at least a year. If we can’t keep Trey, Morris can prob play OG.

2. Make a major move up. High risk, higher likelihood of success.

To move up from #30ish is going to take the entire front end of a draft.
That's going to create major holes when guys are leaving every year.

3. Sign a high priced FA. Some cap risk but have to ask why the guy is available.

Well, we tried that with Taylor and that hasn't been all that great either.

4. Trade major draft comp to a team for an ascending player with an extension. Highest likelihood of success, but highest risk.

See #2.

5. Get lucky. Low level FA turns the corner, mid-late pick homerun, someone on the roster develops. Lowest risk, lowest likelihood of success.
You always take those swings, it just doesn't get noticed unless a Prince Winnebago turns in a pro bowler.

I dunno. We're stuck with Taylor at least another year. Maybe Humphries works out and wants to stick around a couple of years for something reasonable.

that laid out weird. sorry.

If we try to move up, we’re only getting to like 15 or so with huge comp. At that point, you’re still hoping a lot of other teams miss.

I don’t know the right move here. It’s going to take some luck unfortunately.

Losing both Schwartz and Fisher in the same year really hurt. We never quite recovered from that. Hard enough to replace 1 OT in an offseason with no vets in the room.

As bad as it sounds, the only way the Chiefs land a good/great left tackle in the draft is by losing. More teams are refusing to be butt-ravaged by Veach in a trade down and the "clean", high-floor, day-1 starters at LT are long gone by #32.

I would draft or sign 3 this off season. There has to be something better than the shit we have at LT and RT.

CANNOT have this continuous pounding of Mahomes

I'm not opposed to this, just to reduce the hits on Mahomes, but something else will give.

For instance, having an elite D.

Teams will make trades if they think it will make their team better. There are only 3 teams that would have a don't trade with the Chiefs policy. Other then that, this whole teams refusing to trade with Veach is pure fantasy. The bills let us trade up for Worthy just this past draft.

Probably the best chance is when we move on from the Taylor contract and can reallocate that resource, though no idea who might be available then. But I'd think a better LT than Taylor is a RT for that money is perfectly possible. Then it's about rolling the dice and continuing to try for a DT in the draft.

That was a measly trade up only 4 spots.

A trade for a LT is gonna require us to do a Mahomes like giant leap and teams picking that high don’t want to move that far down very often.

We also have end of rd picks which mean a lot less in value so be prepared to give up a metric **** ton to go up that far.

Yes if they wanna trade up it's gonna require an overpay.

It's that, or keep throwing shit at the wall or sign an older vet.

According to the pick value chart, our entire slate of 2025 draft picks is equal to around pick 11.

I almost think a big move up requires us to throw in McDuffie or someone like that.

First and second round picks this year and next would get us to around 6 or 7.

My preferred strategy is the talented vet stopgap approach.

Worked last year with Smith, hopefully this year with DJ.

We moved from 27 to 10 using 2 first round picks and a 3rd to get Mahomes.

If it takes our 2025, and 2026 1st round picks and a random late round pick to get a LT, you wouldn't do it?

Another way to look at it is would you trade worthy and FAU and one of our 3-5th round picks for a LT? Or even less if it's a LT in the teens.

People love those end of the first rounders for some reason.
