Most Valuable Receiver in 2023?

Good morning Chiefsplanet,

With so many new faces to the WR room, I'm having a hard time predicting which receiver is going to have the greatest impact on the offense for this upcoming season. Going into training camp I think most would have agreed that it was going to be Toney's time to shine especially after his Super Bowl heroics.

Now with the season a week away, the tone has shifted due to Toney again not being able to stay on the field. Who do you think will become Pat's favorite non Kelce target in 2023?

I'll go with James. He'll be the shifty guy who breaks defensive schemes.

It's Toney in a landslide, if I could count on Toney staying healthy for the entire season, or even just 14 games. He's the most complete WR on the team, with the best hands (I know, there's no such thing as having good/bad hands in the NFL), can play either inside or outside equally effectively, and can consistently beat press, even jams.

But, I'll have to see Toney play 14+ games in a season before I can believe it, so it has to be Skyy Moore. He's going to get force-fed a ton of opportunities, if we can believe all the offseason/preseason hype (and there's no reason not to), so he should be the most valuable WR just by the sheer volume of targets he's going to see.

Same. I HOPE one of the other guys can step up, but if we're just playing the odds, MVS is the most LIKELY candidate.

I would like to see that as well. But he is 7th on the depth chart. I'm afraid that he won't even be active unless a couple of guys are out hurt.

His hands are good.

And yeah, he wasn't in the right places last year, but im giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one and chalking it up to rookie year learning.

Using his quickness to quickly find and fill soft spots in zones HAS to be his thing this year. If that doesn't develop, then im not sure he's gonna have a "thing" here.

If he's problematic i think he'll quickly concede snaps, likely to James and Rice.

Yep, 100%. He had the most trouble understanding how/where to settle into the soft spots in zone last season; he has to make a big leap with that this year, or his targets are simply going to drop off a small cliff.

Non-answer.

I think WR yardage is going to be pretty close, gameplan specific, and largely irrelevant to the success of this offense.

The question is, "Most Valuable Receiver in 2023?"

Travis Kelce of course.

If the question is, "Most Valuable Wide Receiver in 2023?"

It will be interesting to see who dresses for games each week.

Watson will probably miss a few games because he is close to the bottom in value as a receiver.

If Rice continues his preseason trend of dropping passes, will find himself on the bench and watching.

Ross may find himself on bench to begin season only because the Chiefs have seven WRs which means, MVS, Moore, Toney, James (return man), and Rice probably dress for first games.

Toney will get hurt later which will allow Ross to be on game day roster and then watch out.

Ross will be the best WR by middle of season.

I don't think he has any elements of his game that will dazzle you the way Toney/Rice/James/Ross can, but i do think he'll reliably be in the right place and make the catch when it's thrown to him.

MVS/Toney/Rice/James are gonna be very boom or bust on any given play/Sunday etc.
100% agree and think Moore will get those 101 targets JuJu got last year.

It also doesn't hurt Veach on the subject this week:

Chiefs GM Brett Veach said today Rashee Rice/Justyn Ross would start out as "package" players. The hope is they produce enough to graduate & become every-down WRs later in season. Right now, Skyy Moore is one of those every-down guys. Veach expects a "big jump" from Skyy this yr.
